“I need you,” she said.
He grinned over at her. “And you’ll get me every chance we get.”
She smiled. For some reason, she just knew in her heart that everything was going to be okay, so she relaxed.
Chapter Nine
They pulled in front of the diner and got out. He kept one hand on her the whole time, and she was glad for it. It seemed to keep her steady and feel safe.
He sat them at a booth farther back and had his arm resting on the back of the booth as his fingers lazily caressed her hair.
“Brenna, I’m sorry to hear about your friend,” Fiona said when she walked up with menus.
“Thank you. Fiona, I’d like you to meet another friend, Nicole.”
“It’s nice to meet you, dear. Will you be staying around?”
Nicole’s eyes widened. “Oh, I’m not sure.”
“There’s still a lot up in the air,” Roman said.
Fiona nodded. “Well, I, for one, hope you do. We need more women in this town. Now, folks, the special tonight is goulash.”
Brenna grinned at her and repeated what she had asked the waitress the night before. “Would you eat it?”
Fiona laughed. “This one, I would.”
“Then I’ll take it.”
Roman and Nicole both nodded.
“Okay, three goulashes coming up.”
“So, tell me how someone can be in a town for a day, be friends with everyone, and have a boyfriend?” Nicole asked.
“Oh, well…”
Roman cleared his throat. “Brenna is a special woman that people gravitate toward, which you probably know already.”
Nicole smiled. “Yeah, she’s always done that.”
Brenna rolled her eyes.
“Do you have any new information about her stalker?” Roman asked.
Nicole shook her head. “No. I haven’t seen him. It’s like he’s in hiding. Hopefully, he got run over or something.”
Brenna choked on a mouth full of water, which had Roman chuckling and patting her back.
“Oh, my God, Nicole…”
“Hey, I’m with Nicole,” Roman said.
She narrowed her eyes at him.
He gripped her chin. “Anyone that scares or hurts my ma … woman needs to be destroyed.”
“Wow, possessive much?” Nicole asked, making them both laugh.
