With a cry, she sprang up and ran to get to her friend, only to be stopped by the arm around her waist and her feet a foot off the ground.

He pressed his lips against the side of her head. “Easy, pet. She’s coming. I don’t want you falling.”

Brenna nodded and then was engulfed in a hug. She was aware that Roman kept his arm around her even though she hugged her friend, so he was pinned between them.

Nicole stepped back and grasped her shoulders. “Have they found anything yet?”

Brenna shook her head. “Not yet.” She knew the exact moment Nicole finally noticed Roman behind her. She would have noticed sooner if she hadn’t been stressed.

“Who…”

Brenna grinned at the shock on her friend’s face. “Roman, this is my friend Nicole. We’ve known each other for years.” She turned back to her friend. “And this is Roman, my…” She stuttered to a stop and glanced up at him again.

He grinned. “How about we say I’m her man.”

Nicole’s mouth dropped open. “Seriously? Already?”

“I’ll go into it more later,” Brenna said. “Right now, just know he’s very good and protective of me.”

“Then I approve.” Nicole held her hand out and shook Roman’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“You too,” he said.

“I want to go look for a bit.”

Roman shook his head. “You can get lost easily, and the sun is going down.”

Brenna knew Nicole was disappointed, but her friend had good sense.

Roman noticed both women starting to get chilled. “How about we head back to town? We can get some dinner at the diner and then go home and get some sleep.”

Brenna looked at Nicole. “We’ll be the first ones to know if they find her.”

“I’m not sure I can eat,” Nicole said.

“When was the last time you did?” Roman asked.

“Yesterday sometime.”

He shook his head. “You’re going to eat. You’re not going to be able to help your friend if you’re weak or sick.”

Nicole nodded. “Fine. I’ll follow you. Brenna, do you want to ride with me?”

Roman shook his head. “I’m sorry. But she stays with me.”

Brenna knew part of it was because of the mating heat, and another part was him being protective, but the first reason was she couldn’t tell her friend that yet.

“All right.”

“Hey, Rick, take over the command for us and tell my brother to call me when he gets back here.”

“You got it, Alpha.”

Brenna saw the confusion on Nicole’s face but was thankful she didn’t ask.

Roman tucked Brenna into the truck, waited for Nicole to get behind them, and drove to town.

He squeezed her hand. “We’ll get you guys fed and home. You need sleep, baby.”
