And then his wings lifted. She could feel the force in his body, the energy stored. When he jumped upward, she let out a squeal and clamped her legs tighter to him.

They were going up. Higher and higher, the ground shrinking. His wings beat the air, each downward flap silent but powerful.

Before she knew it, they were above the city. Lights twinkled and cars kept moving. Everyone was oblivious to them overhead.

It was a huge, scary thrill, but she wasn’t terrified. Ivor was strong and stable, and as he dipped left and headed north, she leaned forward and enjoyed the wind lifting her hair and pressing her t-shirt against her body.

She had no idea where they were going except that it was to his home. And what his home would be like … she couldn’t even imagine.

Chapter Five

Ivor felt triumphant. He was on top of the world.

After years of searching, he’d found his mate and he’d taken her away from the unworthy human male she’d been matched with out of duty and tradition.

If he had his way, Rishi Arran would never be mentioned again, let alone seen by Nisha.

The night was clear with a half-moon, and as he made his way toward the mountains, he relished the slight weight of Nisha on his back.

She was the sweetest, bravest, most beautiful woman he’d ever met. His brother and sister would adore her and see instantly that she was the one for him. Then when he got her alone, in his bedroom, he’d let Nisha know just how good he was going to make her feel for all of eternity.

His dragon instinct to mate and claim what was rightfully his was strong, and for so long, it had had nowhere to go. Now he’d found Nisha, he could unleash his passion and desire.

He soared over the Beacons, leaving the lights of the city behind. The roads thinned, becoming capillaries on the landscape rather than arteries and veins.

Even with his eyes closed, he could have found his way home. But tonight, he kept them open. He was concentrating. He had precious cargo.

Eventually, the deep lake and forested valley that Llanarch Castle looked down on were beneath him, and the highest turret was within view. The roof of the turret was flat and made for a good landing place if he wanted to land in his dragon body. Which, of course, he did.

As he approached, Nisha tightened her grip and let out a small gasp.

He concentrated and slowed his wings. With his feetoutstretched, he touched down gently, glad to have made the journey without incident.

“Wow! That was incredible,” she said, sliding off. “And this place … just … wow.”

He was glad she liked it, but it was time to revert to his human form so he could talk to her, hold her, and do all the things he needed to do.

Stepping away from her, he held his head to the sky and released a flame-filled roar, releasing some of the pent-up emotion flooding his hot dragon veins. Then in an instant, and with a puff of smoke, he switched to his human body.

“Ivor!” She clasped her hands to her mouth. “That was so quick … how you changed.”

“I can shift fast or slow, depending on the situation.” He reached for her, curling his hands around her waist. “Just like I can do many things fast or slow.” He set his mouth over hers in a gentle kiss. “How did you like the ride?”

“Not something I thought I’d ever do.” She touched his hair, stroking it back from his brow. “Am I dreaming? This feels like a book or a movie.”

“No. This is real. I’m real. You’re real. We’re real. And we can make our own love story.”

“But … what about—?”

“Don’t talk about him now. I don’t want to hear his name.”

“We can’t just ignore the fact I’m promised to him.”

“You are not,” Ivor said with a growl, the hairs on the back of his neck spiking up like hackles. “He has not touched you or claimed you … has he?”

“No, of course not. We’ve only met twice, and both of our families were there.”

“Good.” His heart rate settled. “So, can we make a promise to not talk about him, to just be us?”
