“Officers,” I say, standing, “I appreciate your concern but I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself.”

“Just in case,” Dawson says, handing me a business card, which I don’t even bother looking at, just tossing it on the table.

“Thanks again, officers,” I say, motioning to the door and they finally get the hint.

“Call us if you see even the slightest of odd behavior.”

“Have a nice day, gentleman.”

I close the door behind them, but don’t immediately tell Jess she can come back in the room. Instead, I put my back against the door and slide all the way down until my butt finds the floor.

Taking a deep breath I stand up and move to my laptop.

Time to do what I should have done weeks ago.

I Google Sam Sparks…and what I find shocks me.

Sam

Not that it was ever in doubt, but Erica just solidified her position as a ride or die. She’s all in, a woman who stands behind her man through thick and thin.

And the timing couldn’t have been any better.

Sam. Work. Evidence disposal. That’s all I’ve done the last week since the packages I ordered arrived containing the things I needed to complete one of the world’s most important cleanups of all time.

If one piece of evidence is left, I’m toast, which is why I smile just as there’s a knock on the door.

The last of the green-brown tinted liquid from my alkaline hydrolysis setup swirls down the bathtub drain.

Aaaaand…it’s gone.

I wipe my hands and move to the door.

“Well, look who it is.”

“Cut the shit, Sam. What’s going on in here?”

“Whaddya mean?”

Officer Dawson goes to step inside but I step in front of him, blocking his progress. “Warrant or get the fuck out,” I growl.

“Damn, Dawson. You smell that?” Fields says, noticing the obvious ammonia stench in the air that the lye produces when you erase all traces of a human’s existence, ironically in an environmentally friendly way no less.

“Sure do,” Dawson says.

“I need you to take a step back so I can shut the door.”

“We’re staying right here,” Fields says, stepping up.

“No, you’re not. You get that warrant, you come back and we’ll have the little tea time you two girls are so anxious to get with me. Hell, I might even break out some fine cuts of meat, raw of course. We can have a big ol’ party. Fill the bathtub with sangria…do it up right. Until then, you can fuck right off.”

I raise my eyebrows and step toward the both of them, crossing my arms as I dare them not to step back. They’re clearly on my trail but I feel confident I’ve covered the last of my tracks, even going so far as to make the tartare and sangria comment, rubbing it in their fucking faces.

“I’m watching you, Sam.”

“I’m watching you too, Dawson…leave.”
