“Norse,” she replied.

“You made it out?”

“Yes. I’ve swept the room as well as I can without my luggage.”

“Last known on Smithson?”

“I left him on the aircraft to deal with the authorities. He was damn good in a bad situation.”

“I heard. Do you need any cover?”

“CCS may have to wipe a few moments of footage at Heathrow. Timestamp 16:35 local time. I accessed the international terminal via the tarmac with a fireman’s badge and departed customs at 16:52 local time.”

“Got it,” Anubis acknowledged. “Hold on while I get the others online.”

Val dropped onto the bed and flopped back. Shit, where was Smith? That was not what he’d signed up for, and she could only imagine what the hell he was thinking. Damn it.

“The Rose is online.”

“CCS online. Securing connections.”

“Smoke online.”

As participants of the call signed on, Val sat up. “Line is secure.”

“We have a wildcard in this situation.” Fury’s voice grated over the line. “Smithson Young. What does he know?”

“About what?” Valkyrie asked.

“You,” Fury said, and the “duh” was heavily implied.

“That I work for Guardian.” Which was true. “We’ve known each other for several years.” Which was also true. “I met him when he was Mrs. Henshaw’s caretaker. After her funeral, we became closer friends. We were traveling to Europe to do the tourist thing.” Which was also true.

“Did you report your movement?” Fury snapped.

“She did,” Anubis interjected. “Europe for the next sixty days. Various points. Standard communications check-in.”

“Doubting my integrity?” Val questioned her superior.

“No,” Fury flatlined his response. “I’m doing my job, so can the indignity. Where is Young?”

“MI5,” the woman in CCS responded.

“Not MI6?” Fury asked.

“No, Five won the pissing contest,” the woman replied.

“Smithson has my extra earpiece. Mine was destroyed during my evac.” Val closed her eyes, waiting for a tirade of “you broke protocol” comments.

“CCS, can you access?” Fury shot the question.

There was a deep sigh. “I can’t. I’m not there yet. Two-way is available, but not monitoring. Not yet.”

“Have Ethan help you and get it done ASAP. I don’t want to leave an asset hanging.”

“We’ll try, but I’m not liking the odds,” the woman said. Val heard her talking to someone else, then a muttered reply back to her. “We’re on it.”

“All right. Valkyrie, take us through everything, step by step.”
