Natalie almost chuckled at the mirrored statement. Although his meaning and motivation were far different from hers.

“We just got in.” Chris huffed.

“I said a half hour and then it was time for teeth and pajamas. That was our deal.”

They both climbed out, a pout still on Chris’s face as he grabbed his towel and stomped inside.

Natalie stood up, ready to follow them in and get herself settled for the evening.

“Don’t—”

The husky voice froze her in her tracks. And this time, he didn’t even try to hide the heated appraisal of her body. “Stay. Right. There.”

The command in his voice shot straight between her legs. She sank slowly back into the water.

“Good girl,” he whispered, a smirk playing on his lips as he leaned over her. His breath against her ear sent a shock coursing down her spine. Looking all too proud of himself, he turned and followed his son inside.

Slowly she exhaled the breath she was holding and inhaled deeply again, trying to calm her racing heart. This man was doing things to her that she never expected. And she wasn’t naïve; it was clear he wanted her. But could she do this?

It had been a while. Too long. She and Greg had separated over two years ago. And although she’d dated a little in recent months, the dates had never gone anywhere. Between momming and working, she hadn’t had time for more than a date or two on occasion. But wasthisgoing somewhere? Or was it a vacation fling?

She didn’t even know the man’s last name. Or did she? It was probably on Finn’s signature on the Airbnb email—if they had the same last name. He said they were brothers, right? Plus, he played professional baseball, so it shouldn’t be hard to figure it out. What position did he play again? She couldn’t remember.

Was it slutty to sleep with someone she knew so little about?

But when Declan opened the door and his face broke into a grin, she no longer cared. He moved toward the hot tub, still sporting only his swim trunks. Every inch of his body was toned to perfection. He braced his hands on the edge of the tub, his heated stare settled firmly between her legs.

“What’s your last name?” The words slipped out before she could stop them.

“Lowery…why?” He zeroed in on her mouth as she licked her lips. His thick, muscular thigh stole her focus when he threw it over the side of the hot tub to climb in. A second equally perfect leg splashed in before he sank into the steamy depths and settled beside her.

“I feel like I should know that if we, I mean…I don’t know. Are we—” Her mind was so muddled she didn’t know how to put her questions into words.

The right side of his mouth lifted, but suddenly he clenched his jaw, his half smile wiped away before it had a chance to grow. “Yeah. I just realized we need to talk aboutthat.”

“Just?” She blinked. Had he not thought of it before? The water rippled as he brought his hand to his chin and rubbed.

He cleared his throat and shifted. “I wasn’t exactly prepared for this—for you.” Remorse glinted in his deep brown orbs. He shifted again, dropped his hand back into the water, and swallowed.

Why was he nervous?

“How would—” That wasn’t right. “Wha—” Nope. Not that either. She shifted, tucking her leg under herself. “Prepared?”

“Nat.”

Once again, his inspection was like a physical touch as it kissed the tops of her breasts. He sucked his bottom lip into his mouth. God. If only it were hers.

“This was supposed to be Chris and me.”

She blew out a breath. Had she misread the signals? Again? No. Because at that moment, she had to fight the shiver that racked her as he inspected every inch or of her skin from her neck to her lips. The desperation on his face said she wasn’t misreading anything.

“If it wasn’t so late, or if everything in this tiny town didn’t close so early, I’d fix the problem. Because not having a condom iskillingme.” He groaned.

Oh.Oh.

“Yeah.” He turned away and sank into the water, flopping his head back to curse at the stars. “If the guys heard about this, they’d laugh their asses off. But it’s been over a year, and no one ever—” He turned, his hot, needy gaze fixed on her. “No one’s made me feel the way you do.”

The statement sent a zing straight to her core.
