“Let me see it.”

Cole spun the file around and slid it across the desk to me. I was a visual person, so reading information clicked more quickly for me. As soon as I read the name, I said, “That’s Quinn’s father.”

“Quinn?” Cole prompted.

“Sasha’s daughter.”

“Sasha?” he prompted next.

I lifted my eyes to his. I took a breath, steeling myself to get some hell for this. Cole was a fellow agent in the FBI and friends with Dallas and me. He was married with kids and had teased Dallas mercilessly when Dallas finally got hitched with Audrey. I’d been the odd man out and frankly scoffed at the idea of settling down.

Sasha turned that thinking on its head, which was kind of crazy, all things considered.

“When I went to Haven’s Bay for the holidays, I ran into an old friend of Thea’s. I might be dating her,” I explained, keeping my tone casual.

“Might?” he countered, giving me a skeptical look.

“Okay, I am dating her.”

“How am I just hearing about this now?”

“Dude, I’ve only been back for two weeks. Plus, I paid the usual toll of going on vacation and have been too busy to breathe around here.”

We joked that there was a high toll to pay when you went on vacation with mountains of email and paperwork to plow through while also jumping right into whatever cases were active.

Cole chuckled. “Fine. I’ll cut you a little slack. Damn. I owe Dallas fifty bucks.”

Glancing up, I narrowed my eyes. “For what?”

He grinned. “Whether you’d ever date someone. I said no because you’re too cynical. Dallas disagreed and said you’d eventually fall.”

I shifted my shoulders as I leaned back in my chair. “Dude, we’re just dating.”

He shook his head. “Nah. You’re the guy who doesn’t even do friends with benefits. You keep things so distant that, if you’re dating, you seriously like this woman.”

My phone rang, and I tapped the button to mute the ringer. “Enough about that. How does this guy tie into the case with Jones?”

“Well, they are both popping up in the trail of people using stolen identities for credit card fraud. The weird part is, they’re not doing it personally. It’s essentially a pass-through scheme.”

“So Quinn’s father somehow knows the Jones family?”

Cole shrugged. “Maybe, maybe not. Either way, they’re both using the same bank and stolen information to funnel money.”

“Fuck.”

My friend gave me a considering look. “Not so sure you should stay on this case.”

“Why?” I practically barked.

Cole’s brows hitched up. “Because it’s personal. You also know what Dallas will say,” he pointed out.

I did know precisely what my older brother would say. I narrowed my eyes at Cole. “I’ll step off the case, but that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna look into it on my own.”

His mouth kicked up in a grin. “I know that. If I wondered if Sasha meant something to you, now I know.”
