“How dare you!” Selene screeched. “Are you going to stand there and let the hired help speak to me like that, Kyros?” she demanded.

Emalee cringed and looked over her shoulder to find Ky standing there with a look of fury on his face, and Em damn well knew he’d only heard her own reckless words, and not anything his damn ex-wife had said.

“Emalee, please leave us,” Kyros snapped, and his impersonal tone was like a slap in the face after the night they’d shared.

“Wait, you don’t understand...” Em began, desperate to excuse her actions.

“Enough!” he barked, making a slashing motion with his hand to cut her off.

But there was no way Em could leave it like this. She knew damn well Selene would do everything she could to blacken her if she didn’t say her piece right now. “Ky, I can explain...”

This time, Kyros cursed, grabbed her by the arm and marched her bodily down the corridor towards the office, while Selene smirked behind her.

Chapter Twelve

“WHAT THE HELL, KYROS?” Em demanded as soon as he kicked the door closed behind them and gave them some privacy.

“Look, Em. I know this is difficult, but Selene is still my wife and I need to respect her wishes to a certain degree.”

The feeling of dread she’d been feeling bubbled to the surface like a volcano and erupted.

“What do you mean, she’s your wife? You’re still married!?” Emalee screeched. She wasn’t prone to outbursts like this, but she’d slept with this man... in the biblical sense!

“It’s a technicality. She refuses to sign the papers.”

“And what? Now she gets to come and tell us all what to do like she rules the roost?” Em challenged, her voice trembling with the depth of anger that was vibrating through her frame.

Ky looked away, uncomfortable. “It’s... awkward,” he finally admitted.

Yeah! She’d say!

“But I need you to just do what she says, and stay out of the way, for all our sakes, okay?”

Emalee felt every drop of blood drain from her face. “You cannot be serious!” The words came out as a whisper, her voice unable to give them any more sound.

“I’m deadly serious, Emalee,” Ky replied, the steel in his tone conveying the truth of what he said.

Em sucked in a breath and clutched her arms around her waist like she’d taken a punch. And she had. It just hadn’t been a physical one.

But it surely couldn’t hurt any more than if he’d struck her.

“So... What? I’m an embarrassment now? You don’t want anyone to know you fucked the nanny and cheated on your wife, so you’re just going to shove me out of sight?”

“It’s not like that,” Kyros hissed. “There’s no cheating going on. Selene and I have been separated for years, as you well know. She just keeps refusing to sign the papers and threatens to take back custody of Kira if I push too hard. Things are not the same in Greece, the courts would be on her side.”

“We’re not in Greece,” Emalee whisper-shouted, her fists clenched at her sides. “And I know Alexander and Coll would never have agreed to this!” Em challenged, secure in that knowledge at the very least.

“Actually, we’ve discussed it and they have agreed,” Ky said, looking everywhere except at her.

Em hadn’t thought it was possible to feel any worse than she already did, but she was wrong. In those few seconds the bottom fell out of her entire world.

“What about the children?” Em whispered, barely able to get the words out past the sharp ache in her throat.

“The children will be fine, it’s just a small blip,” Ky said. He sounded so sure of himself. Like he hadn’t just handed her marching orders and demeaned every second of the past five years she’d dedicated to those children to something worthless.

Emalee couldn’t even speak as her head swam and she battled with the nausea that threatened to overwhelm her. She just turned away, her skin tingling because it felt too tight for her body and walked blindly back to her room while Ky ran off back to his wife.

She passed Coll, coffee in hand, as she stumbled back to her room.
