“Is it true?” she asked, every cell in her body begging him to say it was a mistake. “Did you and Xander agree that I have to do what Selene says?”

“Aye. I’m sorry lass, but we think it’s for the best,” Coll replied, his expression strained and closed off.

For a moment Em thought she was going to pass out. It felt like every molecule of oxygen had left her body. She stared at him, stricken and betrayed. But somehow she stayed upright, refusing to let him see just how much they’d hurt her.

She had a shred of dignity remaining if nothing else.

Turning away she walked resolutely to her quarters.

She had nowhere to go.

The reality of that fact overrode the pain which bombarded her from every direction, threatening to engulf her. Because all she could think of right now was that she had to get out of here. She had to get away from this house and the people in it.

She couldn’t bear the humiliation of running into any of them. She knew why this was happening. It was because she’d allowed that one moment of madness to rule her life - ruin her life.

How could she have been such a fool?

Where did she think things were going to go after yesterday?

Oh god! What was she going to do?

She sucked in a breath and let it out with an audible wheeze, then again, and again.

The light-headedness hit her again and she realized she was in danger of hyperventilating, so she sat down on her bed and tried to regulate her breathing. But no sooner was she still, than that restless feeling overtook her again.

She needed to get out of here.

Without any kind of plan, she dragged out the two huge suitcases she’d used to bring all her worldly goods here five years ago and started slinging clothing and essentials into it.

There was a shipping trunk at the bottom of the bed which she used to store bedding, but now she filled it with the special things she’d accumulated over the years. It was kinda sad that there wasn’t that much to show for her time here.

She slapped a label on it with her parents’ address. She’d have to delay the shipping, but at least it was ready to go.

Looking around the almost empty room, she decided everything else could stay. It wasn’t much anyway. Duvets and pillows; things she could replace easily.

A feeling of intense hopelessness came over her and for a moment she was at a loss for what to do next, so she called an Uber, saying she’d provide the destination address when it arrived.

Then she hauled her cases down the stairs, one at a time, grateful there was no one to see her final humiliation.

“Where to?” The driver asked as he helped her with her luggage.

“Umm... I’m not sure,” she admitted as he started the engine. “Just head towards town.”

“Need an address,” he said gruffly, but his eyes, when he looked at her, held a flicker of sympathy.

Em racked her brain, and looking out of the window, recognising where she was, it came to her.

Of course!

“The hotel,” she exclaimed. Then expanded when the driver just cocked an eyebrow at her which reminded her far too much of Alexander. “The Eddington Spa hotel.”

Thank goodness she never formally canceled her reservation. She had another six days booked. Time enough for her to make a plan...

For the time being, at least, if not the rest of her life.

Chapter Thirteen

“WHERE THE HELL IS Emalee and what did you say to keep her out of the way all this time?” Xander asked a strained looking Kyros several hours later.
