“We’ll round them all up on the way home,” Coll added.
“And Selene’s definitely gone?”
“She bloody better have,” Kyros growled, and there was such a latent fury behind his words that Em didn’t dare ask any more, even though she could tell there was a story there.
In the end, time constraints meant Xander’s mother dropped the twins and Kira home, while they detoured to fetch Nicky.
Alex and Axel tore across the room and launched themselves at her.
“You’re back!” they chorused together.
Kira hung back, but when Emalee took a step towards the young girl, she gasped in shock at the livid gash across the youngster’s cheek which was held closed with butterfly stitches.
“Oh my goodness! What happened?” she cried, closing the gap between them, and gathering Kira in her arms, hugging her fiercely.
She was met with stony silence from the men, so Emalee drew back and looked at Kira in askance.
“Selene backhanded me,” she told her quietly. “She was wearing one of those big ass rings.”
Em sucked in a breath. It didn’t go unnoticed that Kira called her mother by her name. She pulled the girl back in and held her tight against her chest. “Is this why she’s gone? You’ve had her arrested?”
“Not exactly,” Kyros admitted, shuffling from one foot to the other.
Em narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean, not exactly?” she asked with a chill in her tone.
“We used it to coerce her to sign divorce and custody documents agreeing that she would no longer have contact with Kira,” Xander explained when Ky was silent.
All Emalee’s protective instincts roared to life, and she growled long and low, under her breath.
“I did it on purpose,” Kira whispered, lifting her head to look at Em. “I knew she’d get mad if I back-chatted her. She always does.” There was a defiant glimmer in the little girls’ eyes. “It was worth it,” she said mutinously. “Now we’re rid of her for good, Papa and me. That’s far better than the slap on the wrist the police would have given her, and we all know she wouldn’t have gotten more than a caution.”
Yeah, the kid knew far too much for her own good, Em decided, giving her a final hug.
“God it’s hot when you go all Mama Bear on our asses,” Ky said with a smile as he pulled her towards him and pressed a lingering kiss on her lips.
Em tried to pull away, aware of the muted gasp that fell from Kira’s mouth, but Ky just kissed her harder, then handed her to Coll who did the same.
And then there was Xander, taking his place.
“The children...” Em whispered.
“Had better get used to it,” Xander murmured as he took her mouth in a deep kiss.
When they came up for air, Nicky pulled on Em’s shirt hem and stared at her with innocent eyes. “Are you gonna be our mama now?” he asked.
“Yes!” All three men replied as one.
Epilogue
IT WAS CHRISTMAS DAY once again.
It was hard to believe that an entire year had passed. The time had flown so quickly.
They’d settled into becoming their own quirky little family. The children had all taken to calling her Mama, maybe even a little more quickly than Em would have liked considering their unique relationship was still in its infancy.
On the other hand, they’d lived together as a family for a long time, so it wasn’t like there was a lot to get used to.
In the New Year, they were taking a special trip to the Eden resort on the Caribbean Island of Elysium to have a special commitment ceremony. It was a little sad that the children couldn’t be there, since it was an adult only resort, but Xander had hinted that there might be a way around that, and Em knew if there really was one, he’d find it.
