She ran away, and he handed me back my cup. “Luxious wants to see you.”

“Yeah, and I want a unicorn. We don’t all get what we want.”

His head tilted to the right as if he couldn’t quite understand me. “You like pushing his buttons like Hawke.”

It was more of a statement than a question.

“No, he likes pissing me off. I just don’t give in like everyone else.”

“Except when you want to be in his bed,” Samson said.

It was hard to be insulted when Samson said it like it was a known fact. Kind of like someone pointing out the sky was blue.

“Shit happens.” I wasn’t about to deny it or get embarrassed for sleeping with Luxious.

It would mean I regretted it. Honestly, if he weren’t a piece of shit, I’d be on his dick right now. I made my way to the counter filled with bottles of alcohol. I fixed myself another cup and grabbed two beers. Samson’s eyes never left me. I felt them the entire time I moved around.

“Here.” I gave him a new beer, and he accepted it, putting down the one he’d been holding. I noticed it was still full but decided not to call him out on it. “Come on.”

“Where are we going?”

“Somewhere I don’t have to see that fake ass smile of yours.”

Samson’s brows dipped, but he said nothing as he followed behind me. Going upstairs was a no-go. There was probably nothing but bedrooms and fucking one king and kissing the other two. I was already in too deep with them. Not that I thought Samson would want any of that from me.

He peeked over my shoulder, and sure enough, he was closer. His blue eyes shimmered with bullshit. He was beautiful, but it was as if he was only ever trying to show the surface.

I headed for the backyard and bypassed the huge pool full of people. “Is there a part of this place that isn’t crowded?” I asked.

“No, these parties are the only time when our society’s norms don’t weigh on everyone.”

“Except you?”

Samson took a step back, and to my surprise, he shrugged.

“There is a bench over there. We can sit.” I gestured, and we made our way over. The moment we sat there, silence blanketed us. Samson was still smiling, and I groaned. “Would you drop it already?”

“What?” The wind blew his blond hair from his face, and I rolled my eyes. Even the wind was on Samson’s side. Everything made him look beautiful.

“You’re annoying.” I gulped down more vodka, letting it settle and help me relax.

“Only Hawke and Rem tell me that.”

“It’s true,” I said.

Samson stared at me for a long while. Slowly, his smile slipped from his face. In its place was nothing. It was like staring at a wall. A perfectly made one, not even a paint chip or scratch in sight. For some reason, I relaxed even more.

“Why are you here if you don’t like parties?”

“We have to show up,” Samson said, as if that answered all the questions in the world.

“Sounds like bullshit. Aren’t you guys in charge or some shit. Shouldn’t you have a say so?”

“Life isn’t a fairytale.”

“Don’t I know it.”

I raised my cup and grabbed his wrist, and lifted his hand with the beer up. I clunked them together and took another big gulp. I would have the hangover from hell come morning, but that was tomorrow Keegan’s problem.
