“Ow.” Rome cupped his nose in his hands. “You okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Sorry about that, Mister Grier.” Hulk#1 apologized in his booming voice. “But we’re here.”

I couldn’t help it. I strained to look out the windshield and the side window to get a glimpse of where ‘here’ was.

And saw a line of cars in a parking lot.

Exciting. Not.

I sighed, frustrated. I hated surprises. I wanted to know!

And then I saw the huge sign in the parking lot.

Dusk Drive-In

Tonight’s feature:Goonies

“Goonies?” I squealed. “Seriously? Oh my god. I love it!”

Rome laughed. It was such a husky, joyful sound that my lips curved in response. He kissed the top of my head. “I’m glad.”

As we pulled up to the entrance gate, Rome pulled his ballcap down over his sunglasses until he was almost unrecognizable. Hulk#1 exchanged a few words and a wad of cash with the attendant who looked bored out of his mind. He didn’t even glance at the back seat.

A few minutes later we were pulling up at the last row. The Escalade stopped perpendicular to the row of cars, then pulled into a spot. Once we came to a stop Hulk#2 jumped out of the passenger seat and opened my door.

“Oh.” I hadn’t expected that. I let him hold my hand as I stepped down.

“Excuse me.” Rome appeared at my side and took my other hand. “That’s my job.”

“Sorry, Mister—”

Rome cleared his throat loudly, cutting off Hulk#2.

“Right. Sorry, Mister Gee.”

“Thanks.” I flushed. I’d never really had an official date open the car door for me before. It was old-world charming and flustered me.

Rome just shook his head. “See you guys in a few hours. Hopefully.”

I gave a limp wave to Hulk#2 as Rome led me around to the back of the Escalade with its back hatch open. Inside, it looked like a comfy haven with soft pillows and blankets strewn about.

Rome bent his head until his lips brushed my ear. His voice was husky and so freaking sexy when he spoke. “I totally want to kiss you, but the less time spent out in the open, the better.”

I inclined my head in agreement and scrambled into the back of the SUV. I didn’t want us to get mobbed either.

Rome climbed inside after me, looking every bit a predator. “You comfy?”

“Um, yeah.” I patted the pillow next to me awkwardly. This was just so weird. I mean, I was excited to be here, thrilled even that Rome had gone to all this trouble—but I was jittery nervous. Like it was my first date to the movies with a boy.

Rome tossed his hat and sunglasses into the corner behind him before turning onto his side to face me. “I haven’t been to a drive-in since I was little. And we definitely didn’t do it like this.”

I giggled. “Same. I think the last time I did I was in grade school, and we all sat in the back of my dad’s pickup in lawn chairs. Your version is way more comfortable.”

“There are certain advantages to watching a movie like this.” Rome reached over and brushed a stray hair off my cheek gently.

And I melted. Between his touch and that tender expression on his face, I was a goner.
