Every inch of my body still ached, but when a semi-familiar face found mine, grinning, and already half-transformed into his emu, I got the gist.

Right as the back of my head hit the pavement, and the world narrowed to a pinpoint, my brain screaming for Lux while I couldn’t find her.

****

A paw stood on my face. Iwinced as claws dug into pre-bruised skin. I didn’t recognize the shifter who bounced over me, the orange fur announcing an unknown dingo. The next body that passed me was one I did know, and she hadn’t bothered to change, though everyone around her had.

Lux was a whirlwind.

If Ithought she’d been lost in my training and needed to push her, I’d been so wrong.

The girl spun with grace in a deadly fashion. A blade slipped between her fingers—that skill did not come from me—and as soon as it started, it was over.

For once, Rafe wasn’t the one covered in blood.

It was Lux.

I lay on my back, staring up at it all like some immersive 3D virtual reality experience while the girl I loved tore the enemy pack apart like it was a fucking Sunday picnic.

A dumbass smile crossed my lips as Lux turned my world upside down in an instant.

She stood before me at the end of the alley, legs astride, chest heaving. Unspecified fluids splattered across her form in artful sprays while unconscious shifters lay around her in strategic positions. I could almost count out who she had attacked and felled first.

Which meant she’d never been on the defense.

That’s my girl.

Still smiling like a dumbass, I rolled onto my knees and crawled toward her.

A pair of featheredfeet landed next to me and transformed into the imposing figure of my best friend. “The fuck are you doing?” Rafe stared down at me.

I found a bloodied knife Lux had dropped and picked it up with my teeth, blade out, and offered it at her feet. “For you?”I grinned dopily at her. My knees screamed where gravel and broken shards of glass that littered Fray’s back alley cut into my skin.

I didn’t give a fuck.

Lux stared down at me, her gaze wary, and I recognized the fading blood lust of battle. Fuck, Rafe,Josiah, and I had been lost in it enough times that I knew it on sight.

“Jesus Christ,” Rafe swore and walked away, shaking his head.

Lux knelt and took my offering with an excess of grace like the goddess she was.

“You’re so fucking beautiful,” I saidin a sappy voice. My beast disappeared deep inside me, as insulted by my emotional display as Rafe.

Zero fucks to share here, folks.

“You keep saying that.” Lux stroked my face, coating my skin with someone else’s blood, claiming me as hers.

“Be mine?I have a pretty collar that matches your feathers.” I leaned into her touch, knowing I had it all ass about, but I didn’t care. Nothing mattered except for her. “I could be your master. No one else has seen it,” I informed her, thinking of wrapping that collar around her neck and making her mine.

Not a fuck in the dungeon fueled by lust, but making her mine in my house, marking her skin where we could both see it in the daylight, listening to her calling me—

“Yes, Sir,” she whispered, her admission meant for my ears alone.

If I’d been a puppy, I might have bounced on my haunches for joy.

But I wasn’t a puppy, had never been anything like one.

I rose, my thighs aching, head throbbing. Grit fell from my knees. Breath left my lungs empty and hollow as I gathered her to me while my beast roiled beneath my skin, objecting to my pussy-shit display of emotion and love.
