“Mine?” I whispered, burying my face in her hair, tracing over where I’d marked her when I took her virginity.

“Yours.” She wound her way around me, pressing her mouth up to mine, creating a quiet, intimate moment.

Lux kept on kissing me as the alley began to empty around us, though neither of us took much notice.

I swiped at the tears that coated her cheeks, diluting the horror she’d experienced and kissing her back until she pressed tight to me and I could smell her need mingled with her love.

My beast roared his approval from deep inside.

Ours.

Chapter Ten

Lux

My world reduced to a solitary point in the darkness. While Killian waited outside the blacked-out room where I floated in absolute silence, I stillknewhe was there, would always be there when I came back to him.

And while he waited, I soared.

Darknessand silence might have frightened me, once. My flighty nature ensured that sitting still wasn’t my strongest point. But lying back, letting the buoyant salts offer a weightless sensation, I lay with my eyes closed. Palms up and open, by the grace of the miracle that came from the man I loved more than anyone remaining in this world, I let go.

Of everything.

All the pain, all the fear left my body, slipping away into the depths of the pool. My body relaxed, and for once, for the first time in so many years, my mind quietened.

I smiled, the mental brush of Killian’s presence nearby my reassurance. He’d held me while we cleaned each other, letting Fray’s showers wash away any remnants of distrust between us. Water had become our conduit. Once he’d been satisfied that every inch of me was clean, He’d lifted me onto his hips and shown me what sex could be like without pain and without bonds.

I still couldn’t decide what sort I liked best, but I was content to learn with him—and find new ways to reduce his ownstress, the small things I could do to earn more growls from him. Sighing into the darkened space, I released the guilt of the last weeks, of fighting back and not trusting Killian enough to tell him everything, and stopped.

“Feel better?” Killian massaged my scalp with strong fingers, untangling my long hair where it hung damp over my shoulders.

I let out an indecent moan that should never be heard in a public place. The receptionist and patrons might have stared my way; I wouldn’t know. My eyes were closed as Killian worked his magic, and I refused to do anything to deter him.

“Incredible. Utterly amazing. It’s like I’m still floating.”

“Good.” He pressed a kiss to my throat, working his way upward along my jaw line until his mouth captured mine.

Fireworks went off behind my eyes, their electric zing shooting outward to light everynerve ending.

“Wow,” I gasped when he broke the kiss, lifting his head.

“If you’re going to do that every time I’m near you, that dungeon roomis going to be occupied a hell of a lot, and I’m going to need a new bartender.”

“Never going to happen.” I swatted at him. “I live for that bar.”

Killian watched me from beneath hooded eyes and said nothing as he towed me out the door and into his truck. His silence was unnerving from the big man who always had a snarky comeback.

I lasted all of four minutes before I poked the bear.

“Whatis it?”

Killian paused, his hands draped over the steering wheel without turning the engine on. He stared forward, but I knew it wasn’t the streetscape he saw.

“Do you remember when James first came into Fray?”

“Looking like adestitute, homeless ragamuffin?” I raised an eyebrow, twisting in my seat to face Killian.
