They made their way out of the locker room, making sure to check all corners they came across. They didn’t see another human face as they traversed through the long, unending hallways. Vince imagined the map of the building in his mind, following the path straight up to the laboratory. There was nowhere else they could be holding her. Everything else was office space or research centers. She was surely being kept in the lab where they could experiment on her, do whatever they wanted to her perfect body, and destroy her perfect mind.

Vince didn’t want to think about it. He let out a long sigh as he turned right, his pace quickening until he was storming down the hallway. He heard Dino behind him, struggling to keep up.

The last door was ahead of them. Vince rushed to it and placed the ID card against the small magnetic reader. The red light turned green and the door clicked open.

Vince stepped into yet another hallway. He recalled the blueprints, trying to remember if there were any more locked doors from this point forward. As far as he could remember, there weren’t.

“We need to split up,” he whispered to Dino. “Search rooms as quickly as you can and find Lorelei. Call me if you find her.”

Dino nodded then strode off to the right, rushing down the hallway to make his way to the first door. Vince turned left, feeling his stomach turn into a tight ball of anxiety. He went through the hallway as his mind raced. All he could think about was his wife’s sweet face and everything he’d put her through the last few months. How could he have been so stupid to allow a teenager to come between them? How could he have been so fucking selfish? He vowed to himself that he would never let someone else come between them. He would never allow his wife to be pushed aside ever again. She was the most important person in the world to Vince, and he doubted she knew it. He couldn’t remember the last time they’d spent time together alone. That thought alone made his stomach churn.

I gotta find her,he thought.I need to tell her how much she means to me.

He didn’t care what it took, or how dangerous it was. Lorelei was going to be returned to him whether these people liked it or not.

Chapter thirty-four

In the lick of time

Vincebeganhisownsearch through the building. Now that they were past the security door, he was finding more evidence of human experimentation. Small labs were tucked behind thick, metal doors. They were filled to the brim with medical equipment. Some had treadmills with hundreds of wires hooked up to a computer. Others had needles and poking devices. Vince didn’t know why they needed all of this, nor what it was for, but just looking at everything set his teeth on edge.

They hadn’t broken into a medical facility. This place was listed as a headquarter for a sex toy company. Why the hell did they need to run blood tests on sex toys?

Something wrong was going on here. The fact that Lorelei had ended up here only made matters worse. Vince could feel the anger bubbling up in his stomach, making him feel nauseous. He tried to ignore the fact it was Kate who brought her here, handed her over like a sheep for slaughter. He had no time to get angry at Kate. He needed to find his wife. That was his main focus.

He made his way through the long, twisting hallways, following the curves of the building as he made his way up. The small labs made way for offices, filling up entire floors with hundreds of people. They sat at their desks, filing paperwork and tapping away on their keyboards as if working in this place was completely ordinary. Vince didn’t stand around and gawk. He moved through the offices, trying his best to avoid the windows and stop himself from being seen.

The floors got smaller as he grew closer to the top of the building. There were fewer places for him to hide and avoid detection. Thick, brick walls had been replaced with floor-to-ceiling glass, giving everyone a chance to see him. The room around him seemed to slant sideways. He struggled to breathe as he glanced at his surroundings.

A couple of people noticed him. Through the haze, he could see their mouths moving. One of them even pointed at him.

Vince took a deep breath, trying to clear his mind and vision, before rushing toward the stairs behind him. He wasn’t going to let these people stop him. He was going to find his wife and bring her home.

As he put his foot on the first step, he felt something hard and warm clamp onto his shoulder. He tried to continue to run and shrug the grip off his shoulder, but it didn’t work. He was dragged back, away from the stairs, and a set of arms wrapped around his body to hold him in place. Vince struggled against the arms but his captor had the strength of iron bars.

He glanced over his shoulder, two burly women held him in place. Their arms were larger than his and their hard, uncaring eyes looked through him as if he wasn’t even there.

“Let me go,” Vince hissed. “You don’t know what you’re involved in.”

One of the women laughed. Her bright, red hair jostled around her face as her whole body shuddered.

“You don’t know,” Vince repeated, but he already knew it was pointless.

These women knew exactly what they were involved in. They knew people were being held captive and abused. Vince stopped struggling against them and let them carry him off. They dragged him through the offices, leading him away from the staircase. He looked back at it longingly as he was brought into the depths of the building.

He was taken through more security doors, more than he could count, until there was no hope of escape. Vince felt his heart sinking through his chest, diving down into his stomach. In the back of his mind, he couldn’t help but hope he would at least get to see his wife one last time. He didn’t know what these people were going to do to him for breaking and entering, but he knew it wasn’t going to be pretty.

The two large women brought him through the last set of security doors, swiping their tags against the scanners. The doors slid open to reveal a vast room, completely devoid of natural light. There were no windows—only bright, fluorescent lights embedded into the ceiling. In the middle of the room stood equipment Vince couldn’t name. Devices that had wrist and ankle clamps attached at either end. Wires and all manner of things were attached to the device, allowing Vince’s mind to wander. Dozens of those machines were dotted around the room.

In some of them, women were entangled in the wires and clamps. They had gags in their mouths and their naked bodies were covered in wires. Between the women’s legs, Vince could see mechanical arms thrusting dildos into their vaginas. The women’s eyes were all closed, as thick, gooey strings of drool dripped down from their mouths. Their bodies were vibrating as they panted, struggling to focus on anything but the pounding they were receiving.

Was this what Lorelei was subjected to? Has someone done this to my wife?

Vince was dragged through the room until he was standing opposite a group of women, all wearing white lab coats. Their backs were turned to him. They spoke to one another softly.

“Yes,” one of the women purred. “I believe these two are perfect specimens for the next run.”

“I agree,” another said. “I’ll get them ready.”
