We eat our meal in mostly companionable silence, and when I’ve paid the bill, we walk back to the waiting car. Sasha looks tired, and I keep an eye on her in my periphery as I drive, watching as she leans her head back against the seat.

“Are you alright?” I glance over at her, and she nods, not opening her eyes.

“Just jet lag, I think. I’m not used to it.” She swallows, her fingers twitching in her lap, but after a moment, it looks as if she falls asleep.

I let her nap until we pull into the drive leading to the estate. I gently touch her thigh, shaking her a little as I make my way down the long, winding driveway lined with trees. “We’re here,” I tell her, and I see her eyes widen a little, glassy and tired, as I pull the car into the huge courtyard, complete with a fountain of two lions in the center.

“There’s no water,” Sasha says, laughing softly, and I grin.

“Well, it’s been a while since anyone was really home.” I turn off the car, getting out to come around and open her door, noticing that she’s a little unsteady on her feet as I help her out. “Once we get inside, you can lay down for a while if you want.”

“Okay,” Sasha murmurs, leaning on me a little as we walk towards the long steps leading up to the grand estate house. I gesture to it, feeling the tiniest bit of pride as I look at it, even if it’s not really mine–and was never meant to be.

It’s still so much more than she ever thought I had before.

“Welcome home–for now,” I tell her teasingly, turning towards her–only to see that her face has gone suddenly pale, a sickly milky-white as she sways on her feet, her eyes glassier than before.

“Max–I–” She swallows hard, a hint of fear suddenly on her face. “I don’t feel good–”

And then, as I look at her, my heart in my throat, Sasha collapses in front of me and into my arms.
