“So, are you leaving?”

“I don’t know. I just don’t want to be around my family, and they are everywhere on Nantucket.”

“Can I get in?” she asked.

“Why?” he asked. “I know you can’t leave.”

“I don’t think you should either,” she said. “And it’s okay to tell me it’s none of my business, but I think you need a friend and someone you can just be real with. You know I won’t judge.”

“I do know that,” he admitted. “But you have to stay here. It’s your job.”

“I know. Stay with me. Don’t do the wedding, don’t see your family, if that’s what you want. Stay with me like we just hooked up and you’re on vacation. Take a few days to figure this out.”

He gave a snort as he shook his head. “It’s going to take a lot more than a few days to sort this out. But I think I would like to stay with you. Are you sure? I know you said one night only.”

“I did. And I’m not sure what will happen between us. Come with me as a friend,” she said.

He nodded. “Hop in.”

She walked around the car and got in. He didn’t bother to put it in gear but just rested his arms on the steering wheel and stared at the ferry port. If she’d just learned she wasn’t who she thought she was, she’d be looking for a magic genie to make this all go away. But Logan had always been more practical. The kind of man who faced things head-on.

“I don’t know what to do next,” he said. “This isn’t like a business hit where I can regroup and go after the person responsible...it’s my mom...oh, God, Q, my mom isn’t my mom,” he said, putting his forehead on the steering wheel.

She put her hand on his shoulder and squeezed. “She’s still your mom. She raised you and she loves you. She’s always going to be your mom.”

“I get what you’re saying but how can I look at her the same way?” Logan asked. “Everything’s changed.”

“It has. And there’s no going back. I don’ t know how you’ll move forward, but I know you will.”

“How? How do you know?”

“Because you’re not someone to run away from a problem,” she said.

He clenched his jaw and then nodded. “You’re right. But I can’t begin to think of a solution.”

“Give yourself the day,” she said.

“Just one day?” he teased.

“As many as you need. But I know you, Logan Bisset. You aren’t one to wallow for long,” she said.

He wasn’t. It was funny that the woman he hadn’t seen in over ten years would still know him so well, but he realized that he’d been more honest in his relationship with Quinn back in college than he’d been with any other person in a relationship since.

He knew part of it was that he’d been hurt when things had ended, and he’d decided never to allow someone to get close enough to make him feel like that again. And until today, when he’d learned of his mom’s deceit, he hadn’t. He’d protected himself well from feeling this kind of emotional pain.

Maybe Quinn was the only one to help him make sense of this and figure out how he was going to handle being a twin to a man he hated.

He hadn’t forgotten about that. He’d been dwelling on the betrayal he felt with his mom, but Nick was his twin. How was that even possible? Nick was everything he hated.

“Don’t think about anything else,” Quinn said. “I can see it building in you.”

“I don’t think I can shut it off,” he said. “Nick can’t be my twin. I hate that man.”

“He is,” she said.

“How can you be so sure?”

“If he wasn’t, you wouldn’t be upset,” she pointed out. “You don’t know him outside of the boardroom. I think there is a lot more to him than you realize.”
