“Frustration.” He nodded to the door. “When we came in, and you called me Alpha-Mate, I got satisfaction. Happiness. Just now with Saint, I got possessiveness and jealousy.”

“And what else?” Alice looked at him keenly.

“I’m hearing his thoughts.”

Silence met his words, and he waited.

“Talk us through what happened last night,” Vaughn said after a moment.

“Umm….”

Alice giggled. Actually giggled, and Marshall threw her a baleful look. She waved a hand in apology.

“We don’t need the details, Marshall. We know you sealed the bond. We all felt it.”

“What?” Marshall sat up straighter. “What do you mean, you all felt it?”

“When Aaron claimed you—when he bit you—the soul bond sealed. There was a pulse of energy that went through the Pack link.”

“All I remember is the pain when he bit me.” He flicked a glance at his parents. “Then, ah, intense pleasure and I saw stars.”

*Light* *Bright*

“Yeah. That’s right. Not stars. A bright light.” He petted Aaron’s head and got an ear flick in return.

“Wait? Did Aaron just tell you that?” Sam said, and Marshall could see the excitement on his face.

“Yeah. It’s not sentences like this,” he said, waving a hand between them. “Just words. He just said ‘light’ and the word ‘bright’.”

“Hmm. Kyr make a note,” Alice said, patting the librarian on his leg.

“Already setting search parameters,” he replied, fingers tapping rapidly on his tablet.

“Okay. Great. Now, can we figure out how to get Aaron back in human form, please? I’d really like to have a proper, two-way conversation with my mate.”

“Can you compel his shift, Dad?” Josh asked.

“No, I don’t think so, not now,” Vaughn admitted. “As I’m no longer his pack alpha, I don’t have that power. We could contact someone from the Assembly, someone who holds a higher rank than Aaron, but I don’t know if that would work.”

“It won’t,” Alice agreed. “Only Marshall can do it.”

“Me? But I’m human, not shifter.”

“You’re his mate. Hisanima vinculummate. Your bond is stronger than a normal mating bond. You’ll be able to bring him back.”

“How?” Marshall’s tone was sharp. He could feel a headache starting to form. This was information overload, mixed with worry for Aaron.

“I hate to interrupt, as I know this is all very important.” Marshall turned at the sound of his mother’s soft voice. He smiled at her and got one in return.

“What’s up, Ma?”

“I think before you go any further, you should eat. Regardless of what you and Saint think, you can’t function on coffee alone.” She threw him a wink. “You’re getting hangry. Have something to eat and then we can focus on what needs to be done.”

Marshall’s stomach grumbled in agreement, and he nodded.

“I’ll call the kitchen and get George to send through fresh eggs and bacon,” Anna said, reaching for the phone on a side table.

“While we wait, may I look at where Aaron bit you?” Sam asked.
