Past

My cellphone rings, but it’s a blocked number, so I let it go to voicemail. I’m already on the line with Aunt Coretta, whom I talk with at least once a month.

“You know you can spend spring break here in Denver with us,” she tells me over the phone.

“I’d love to,” I say as I grab a La Croix from the refrigerator and walk back to my room, “but I might need the time to catch up on stuff.”

The truth is, the plane ticket is a little more than I can afford right now.

“Okay, I understand, Bridget honey. You know, I’d also understand if you couldn’t make it out here for other reasons, too.”

“Other reasons?”

“Like maybe a boy in your life?”

“No, it’s school and my internship,” I assure her as I pull on a zipper hoodie over my tank top and sweats before sitting down in front of my computer. The blocked number comes up again, but I decline the call.

“So there’s no one in your love life? Anyone even on the radar?” asks Coretta.

For a second, Darren flashes through my head. But he and I haven’t been in touch since the night at his place. As part of me suspected, it turned out to be a one-night stand. I don’t regret it, though. It was the most amazing sex I’ve ever had. Not that I’ve had much sex to compare it to. I dated Dante for eight months and briefly dated a classmate last year for all of three months.

“Nope,” I tell Coretta, “which works for me because I’m thinking to do an honors thesis. Maybe get a second job.”

“That sounds like a lot. You do anything for fun?”

“Made your collard greens last weekend.”

“That’s the most fun you’ve had this week?”

I laugh, a little nervously, because I’m not about to confess to sex with Darren. Not to a woman I consider my second grandmother. “My friends and I hung out. Last night, Simone and I binge-watched half of season five of The Wire.”

“That the one with Lance Reddick?”

“Yep.”

“Oh, he’s yummy.”

I laugh. “Yeah, he is.”

After we finish our conversation, Simone pops her head into my room. “You wanna watch a few more episodes tonight?”

“Sure. After I get an outline done for my Health Policy class.”

I turn on my computer, glad that I’m not out at The Lotus with Amy. Well, kind of glad. She’s been to the club a few times this week already and is headed there again tonight. Now that she gets picked up by JD’s driver and doesn’t have to come back late on public transportation, there’s less of a need to have an accompaniment.

“It’s okay if I’m not invited,” I had replied. “I’ve got a paper due in my Health Policy class.”

“Cool.”

A part of me was a little bummed not to be joining Amy for the chance to see Darren again, but it was best I get on with my normal life. Of course, I could have reached out to Darren myself and left him a message at his club. I’m not one of those old-fashioned women who believes the guy has to make all the moves. It’s the vibe that I picked up from him when he dropped me home last weekend. If he wanted to see me again, he’d find a way to reach me. He could get my number from Amy via JD.

So if Darren wasn’t interested, I wasn’t going to pester him.

I try to review the article I need for my paper, but once Darren enters my mind, it’s hard getting him out. My body wants to relive that night with him, and no amount of masturbating seems to do the trick.

“Aaargh,” I growl at my desires. It must be that time of month when my hormones want my body to make a baby or something.
