For the past 5 weeks (January 20-February 24), the CECC has rapidly produced and implemented a list of at least 124 action items, I read from the Journal of the American Medical Association.

I wonder what Darren’s doing right now. Or who he’s with. Some other hot model like his ex? Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if Darren ended up back with Kimberly. If she had the choice, I can’t see how she chooses Eric Drumm over someone like Darren. So what if Drumm has more money? Once you reach a certain threshold, does all that additional cash make a difference?

And there’s no way Eric can be better in bed. I’m convinced that guys like Eric are too self-absorbed and arrogant to become good lovers.

Now, would Darren really choose to go back to Kimberly? Why not? There are guys whose insecurities require them to have eye candy on their arms to present to the world, guys who simply value looks over anything else.

I’m supposed to be analyzing health policy, not Darren’s dating life. I go back to reading. For the past 5 weeks (January 20-February 24), the CECC…

Wait. I’ve read this already.

“I’ve got it,” Simone tells me after a knock at the door.

It’s probably Kat. She’s always forgetting her keys at her boyfriend’s place.

How did Coretta know to ask about my love life? She doesn’t usually pry. We talk a lot about her grandchildren, the reason she moved out to Denver, and reminisce about her days in Oakland. Maybe it’s something in the air.

I go back to the article. For the past 5 weeks…

“Hey.”

The voice startles me because I recognize it, and it’s not whom I expected.

Glancing toward my door, I see Darren, looking super-hot in a casual blazer over a white oxford and chinos.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

“You greet everyone like that?” he returns.

I flush. “I mean, hi. But seriously, what are you doing here?”

“You didn’t come to the club with Amy.”

Because I wasn’t invited. Instead, I say, “Oh, um, I have a paper I need to work on.”

“Yeah? When’s it due?”

“Next Friday.”

“So you could have come tonight.”

“Yeah, well, I wanted to get a head start on the paper. Plus, I told Simone we’d camp out in front of the TV together tonight.”

At that moment, Simone passes by my room on the way to hers. “We can catch The Wire another time.” She turns to Darren. “Nice meeting you.”

He nods. When he turns back to me, Simone, standing behind him, points at him, then fans herself as if she’s overheating. With a wink, she turns to leave.

I blush deeper.

“Something the matter?” Darren asks.

I shake my head. “No! I just—you didn’t say why you’re here?”

“Like I said, you weren’t at the club. And I tried calling you, but you didn’t pick up.”

“Oh. Were you expecting me at The Lotus tonight?”

“I didn’t have any expectations one way or another. Probably better you didn’t come. Your two favorite people, Kimberly and Eric Drumm, were there tonight.”
