“We’ve tripled our security and increased foot traffic in the most vulnerable spots. We’re still getting taken off-guard,” Lucius explained. “So, does anyone have any theories?”

“Fae magic,” I blurted. “That’s the first thing that comes to mind.”

Charlotte nodded. “That would explain why the solar lamps were acting so strange.”

My brows knitted together. “What?”

“While I was trying to…” She swallowed hard. “When Henry and I were stuck in the backyard, it seemed way darker than usual. Like dusk hadn’t just happened. There were so many shadows that my night vision hardly worked.”

Donovan growled. “That’s magic.”

“But the fae are neutral,” Lucius argued. “It’s been…” He counted on his fingers and then shook his head. “Centuriessince the last intervention.”

“Maybe not,” Donovan pointed out. “Sasha and I had help from Bruise plenty of times.”

I coughed anxiously. “Which means they could be offering vampires help, too.”

“Bruise wouldn’t do that,” my alpha snapped. “Watch your tongue, Adam.”

“I’m not saying Bruise specifically. Just the fae in general.”

“But why now?” Charlotte inquired. “Why would they suddenly want to insert themselves in a war they claimed they never wanted to be part of?”

I shrugged. “Something must have changed their minds. Otherwise, we have to come up with a new theory.”

Lucius snorted. “Like what? Space travel?”

“Sure, why not?” I posed thoughtfully. “Or spelled rings. Or cloaks. It could beanything.”

“Adam is right,” Charlotte whispered. “They could be receiving help from witches. Isn’t that how vampires were originally cursed?”

Donovan nodded. “In the ancient world, a witch was tricked out of silver pieces for assistance with crops. She cursed the man who tricked her to walk hungry in the dark for eternity.”

“Sounds like a kid’s fairy tale,” I scoffed.

“His pain could be reduced by feeding on life force. He was given a choice of what that would be—and he chose blood.”

Lucius cringed. “Horrific.”

“Silver pieces,” I said slowly. “That’s why silver hurts them, right?”

Donovan nodded. “If left untreated, it can kill them. Silver for them is like wolfsbane for us.”

“Too bad garlic won’t do the trick.” No one else laughed but me. I shook my head and sighed, “Tough crowd.”

“The point is that a witch started the curse, so maybe…”

Charlotte tapped her chin. “Maybe one of them can end it, too.” Horror leaked into her eyes as she looked at me and whispered, “He’s the key to our freedom.”

I frowned. “What?”

“That’s what the vampire said to me before they took Henry. They said they need him for something.”

“Then, it’s witches,” Donovan stated with confidence. “It’s the only proper assumption we can make here.”

Part of me was excited to have an answer—and then another part of me was alarmed by the realization.

Vampires weren’t the only ones with a stake in this fight.
