“This is getting fucking complicated,” I groaned. “Alright, what do we do next?”

“I can ask Sasha to bring—” Donovan shot up from his chair. “Shit, Sasha must be worried sick.”

He fled from the room with Lucius trailing after him. My heart hammered in my chest when I saw how white Charlotte had gone in the face.

I patted my pockets instinctively to find my phone. “Don’t cry, cherry. We’ll call your family right now. I’m sure after we explain what happened—”

“Adam, I’m so sorry.” Tears caked her face. “I totally failed you and Henry.”

After plucking my phone from my pocket, I crawled into the bed next to her and wrapped her in my arms. “We’ve been over this—there was nothing else you could have done.”

“You’re acting awfully calm about this.”

Wrong.

I wasfarfrom calm.

Every bone in my body screamed to go running after my son. My wolf slammed against the walls of my human form, roaring to be released, to get vengeance. A low-key ache rumbled through my muscles, a restlessness I knew wouldn’t dissipate until my son was back in my arms where he belonged.

But on the outside, I was the surface of a still lake. Nothing could penetrate my control.

Well, almostnothing. “Going nuts won’t do shit.”

“But it’s all you want to do, right?” She traced the collar of my shirt with the tip of her finger. “That’s how I feel. Like I’m going to explode.”

“He’s not even your kid.”

She glared at me. “No, so I’m not sure why I feel like this.”

“Do you care about him?”

“No shit, Adam. Of course, I care about your son. He’s an innocent pup who just wants the best out of the world. He deserves to live in peace. He deserves to besafe.”

The conviction in her voice impressed me. This woman who had just days ago been a convenient lay during a hard research session was fast becoming one of the closest people to me in my life—aside from my alpha, of course.

No one could possibly get closer to me than Donovan. But it seemed Charlotte was trying.

And I didn’t think I wanted to stop it.

Is that why he was upset with me the other day?No, that thought needed to be released. There were more important things happening right now.

“Here, text your girls,” I said while handing her my phone. “You need to rest, too. You’re running on fumes.”

She snorted. “I’m running on the fumes of fumes.”

“Me, too, baby.”

Her eyes rounded while she cradled the phone, peering at me with those golden gems that told me everything I needed to know about how she was feeling. No words needed to be exchanged between us. Sensation alone informed me of her pain.

It was a connection I didn’t think was ever possible.

I pushed her hand. “Go on. I’ll be right outside.”

She snatched my hand. “No, don’t leave.”

“Lottie, you need space to talk, I’m sure.”

“Please,” she begged. Tears dotted her eyelashes. “Don’t leave.”
