I couldn’t let him do that.
“Let me in,” I whispered. “I don’t want to be shoved out.”
His brows broke apart. “What?”
“You do this when it feels like I’m getting close to you.”
He drifted back an inch. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I think you do, Adam. I think you know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“No, I don’t.”
He scooted an inch away but didn’t leave the bed. Just having him next to me made me feel better even though a crater had opened up between us emotionally. But not for long.
Not if I could help it.
He closed his eyes as he exhaled slowly. “You’re not Marina. I know that. But sometimes, I think you might take off just like she did.”
Surprise, surprise. The fuckboy hadfeelings. If he had admitted to this before, I might not have believed him. But after what we experienced at his cabin, it didn’t feel like this was a fling anymore.
And I didn’t want it to be that way either.
I studied him carefully. “You want me to stick around?”
He hesitated a moment, the scent of his indecision cloying the air. And then he nodded.
“Adam…” I whispered.
“I know. It’s stupid. I said I wouldn’t do this.”
I frowned. “Do what?”
“Care about you.”
“You care about me?”
He chortled. “Hasn’t it been obvious?”
“I don’t know. You have a funny way of showing it.”
“Like you don’t?”
I squinted at him. “Hey, you don’t complain about my food.”
“Why would I? It tastes like heaven, seriously.”
Hearing those words made me smile. “If you mean that, then why do you keep shoving me out?”
“I just don’t…” He glanced at the doorway, the ceiling, and the tiles. Anything but me. Because looking at me would just make him open up, wouldn’t it? “You’re not Marina.”
“So you said. Who’s Marina?”
He gulped. “My ex-wife. She took off. No explanation or anything. Three weeks after she gave birth to Henry, she disappeared.”
“Adam, that’s terrible.”
“I thought she was dead for a long time.” He sighed while bowing toward his knees. “Sometimes, I wish that was the case.”
