I gasped. “Christ, that’s an awful thing to say about someone.”

“You weren’t there. You don’t understand the pain she caused.”

“People always leave for a reason. Shemusthave had a good reason, Adam.”

He growled. “Not everyone has good reasons, Charlotte. Okay? You can see the best in people all you want, but it won’t stop them from hurting you.”

It was a slap in the face to hear that, like frigid cold water first thing in the morning.

But it might have been something I needed. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize.” He tugged me into his arms. “I shouldn’t have blown my lid about it.”

“No, I get it. People will hurt you even with the best of intentions. That was something I had to learn myself.”

He frowned. “Somebody hurt you?”

I laughed. “Adam, you think I made it to twenty-five without experiencing some kind of pain?”

“No, I just… I hate that you did.”

“Why?”

A dashing grin splashed his lips. “Come on, Lottie. Really? Do you have to ask?”

“Yeah, I have to ask. I’m having a hard time believing this is real.”

“Well, maybe I can prove it to you.”

I shook my head. “Nah, I don’t think you can.”

“Listen, you’re not the only one who likes challenges here.”

“Really?”

He nudged my legs open with his knee while nuzzling my throat. “Sweet cherry, you havenoidea, do you?”

What his lips did to my flesh conjured memories of our first encounter. Though we weren’t anywhere near the inn, I could sense the aromatic blend of herbs wafting from the kitchen, the familiar hum of energy, and the way the room contained our spirited exploration.

Every moan that fluttered from me prompted his next move. His fingers drifted south, traced the hem of the hospital gown, and then flew underneath the fabric, disappearing between my thighs. A shudder drove my knees to climb his hips. Arching into him felt like the most natural thing to do and drew an ancient hunger to the forefront of my mind.

I only want him, I thought while his fingers danced north. His thumb curved into the slit of my hip. Any barriers blocking his journey were gone, destroyed by the simple command of his touch. No one else will ever satisfy me like this. I don’t even want totryto get this from someone else.

Shivering moans burst from my lips when he squeezed my hip.

I refuse to try.

“Am I proving it yet, baby?” he teased in a husky voice. “Do you believe me now?”

I licked my lips. “Maybe… maybe not.”

“You just want me to try harder, don’t you?”

His thumb traced my slit, causing my channel to ache. Desire shot from my core to every limb in my body and I clenched around him. A mewl of disbelief sprung from my lips. If he could do that with one stroke, then what could the rest of him do?

It was silly to consider because I already knew that. Yet my body seemed to be having a hard time registering his effect on me. Denying it just felt easier.

Because then I wouldn’t have to reconcile the fact that a man cares about me.
