As long as I avoided thinking, I could prevent myself from having a panic attack about everything that was going on. It was probably dumb. Actually, it was probably useless, but it made plenty of sense to me.
And what made sense to me was going to fly.
For a while, anyway.
Charlotte sat on the edge of the bed and crossed one leg over the other. “I think Nina would be our best protector.”
My barking laugh made her glare at me.
“What the hell is so funny to you?”
“She’s just so… so…” I batted my eyelashes. “Proper, you know?”
She planted her hands on her hips. “You’ll regret saying that.”
“It’s probably better than the bubbly one.”
She gasped. “Rose is a talented boxer. She taught me a few moves herself. You just think we’re all defenseless, don’t you?”
“No, I don’t. I swear.” I held up my hands as a sign of surrender—though maybe I didn’t entirely mean it. “It’s just that whole thing about looks, you know?”
“Uh-huh.”
I grinned. “Lottie, don’t be mad at me.”
She huffed while turning away and crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m… I’m not mad. I’m just…”
“Irritated? Adorably chaffed?Disturbed?”
“You’re the only person in the world who can ruffle my feathers like that.”
My tongue danced behind my teeth. Did I dare?
Yeah, why not?
“Feathers?” I joked. “I thought you were a wolf, cherry.”
Slowly, almost painfully so, she turned her annoyed gaze in my direction. A vein in her neck bulged, dragging my attention to the delicious patch of flesh that still bore my mark. She was wearing it openly at this point.
Did that mean she liked it?
Her nostrils flared as she resisted the urge to smile. “Take it back.”
I leaned forward and said pointedly, “No.”
“Adam, pup,darling,” she stated while standing up. She dropped her arms to her sides and squinted at me. “Take it back,now.”
“Or what?”
She shrugged. “Or I won’t help you.”
“You’re just acting like a brat because you’re mad.”
“Nope.”
I grinned mischievously and closed the space between us. “You keep acting like that and I might punish you.”
“Promise?”
