I jumped, yanking the phone from my ear. “What?”

“Speak.”

I barked.

“Sweet gods, make me patient,” Donovan groaned. “Please, don’t make me sprint across town to wrestle my beta.”

“Asking for patience and then losing it at the first opportunity to develop it is kind of backward, don’t you think?”

He seethed. “Adam, seriously.”

“They were checking out Charlotte, okay? Is that a good enough answer for you?” I puffed up just thinking about it. “They were giving her some serious eyes. It was gross. I had to make them stop.”

“I see.”

I started to speak but stopped. “Oh, don’t talk to me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re my father.”

He cackled. “We’ve already covered that. I’m not your father.” He paused, the sound of papers rustling in the background. “I’m going to outline the roads I want you to take, okay? It’ll be the safest route.”

“That sounds good. Thank you.”’

“Wow, no argument.”

I scrubbed my forehead. “Are you going to tease me all day?”

“Maybe. Possibly. I’m considering having Lucius do it for me.”

“Why?”

He snickered. “Because you’re in love, buddy. Why else?”

“I’m not in love,” I barked. I lowered my voice, crouching toward the table while whispering, “Fucking last thing on my mind, dude.”

“You’ve been distracted by Charlotte for like… How long have you been working with her?”

I sighed. “I don’t know. I’ve lost track of time.”

“Yeah, exactly.”

“Whatever, Donnie.”

He chuckled. “So, I’ll send Lucius with his team around noon. Will you be ready by then?”

Movement on the other side of the door alerted me. I sighed while sitting up, stretching my free arm above my head. “Yeah, I’ll be ready by then. I’ll tell Charlotte the plan.”

“And Adam?”

“Yes, alpha?”

“Please,” he pleaded in a low voice. “Don’t make the same mistake I did.”

It wasn’t until the line clicked that I realized he wasn’t talking about the plan.
