He frowned with concentration while peering up at the carving. “You sure?”

“That’s a young girl.”

“Almost looks like a saint.”

I shuddered while staring at the empty eyes peering back at me from the white stone. Her devastated expression tugged at my heartstrings. “I think we found our betrayed bride.”

“What are we looking for?”

“Your guess is as good as mine. We need the reversal spell and Lorena said it would be here.”

Adam lowered his head and began searching the area. While it was mostly sparse, it seemed like people—or creatures—often visited the place. I didn’t want us ruining anything or leaving a trail behind.

Though that was probably moot at this point considering we were leaving our scent everywhere.

“Found something,” Adam called from across the crypt. “It’s a book.”

“A book?”

He held up a leather-bound tome. “Spells. We should just take it.”

“Check it first,” I suggested. “We need to make sure it has what we need.”

When Adam cracked the spine, a chill raced through my body. I kept looking back at the statue and expecting her to move.

It’s just marble. She’s not real. I shuddered.Gods, I hope she isn’t real.

What a silly thought to have.Of course, she wasn’t real. I mean, the physical manifestation of her was around here somewhere, but the statue itself didn’t harbor life. That was just ridiculous, a scary story for kids.

It was so strange how much I felt like a child at this moment.

While Adam thumbed through the pages, I scanned the words popping out at me.Blood packs, silver elixir, changeling—I grabbed his hand. “Stop!”

“This is a spell for…”

“Siphoning life force.” I gulped while reading the yellowed page. “They think Henry will increase their immunity to silver.”

Adam growled. “They’re draining him until he’s nearly dead.”

“But it can be reversed.” I shoved my face closer to read more. “It says the blood of the mother can stop the process.”

“Why can’t we just take him out of the ritual?”

I pointed to the page. “‘Let the body continue to give life outside of the ritual circle’ is what it says.”

“What do we do?”

My eyes fluttered over the page while imbibing more knowledge. The reversal spell revealed itself at the bottom of the page, causing me to yelp victoriously. “Blood of the mother and this ritual will do the trick.”

Adam clapped the book shut and set it on the shelf. “We’re done here. Let’s go.”

I frowned. “Adam, what are you doing?”

He wandered toward the mouth of the tunnel without saying a word. I snatched the book from the shelf, hugged it to my chest, and stared at the statue while trotting past it. Once I was clear of her stony stare, I chased after Adam, slipping on a few rocks covered with glowing moss.

“Adam?” I grabbed his shoulder. “Hey, why are you giving up?”

He spun around, eyes glowing as furiously as the ethereal walls flanking us. “Do you know what happened when I found Marina?”
