I squeaked while taking a step back, holding the book to my mouth. “N-No.”

“She said her life was so good without us that she wanted me to consider her dead. That’s it, Charlotte. End of story.”

“But that can’t be the end. If you tell her you need her blood, then maybe—”

He punched one of the stones nearby, nearly shattering it to pieces. “Then, maybe she’lllaugh.”

Horrified silence crashed into my ears. Beyond that was the steady explosion of waves on the rocks below the cavern. And above, the wind howled viciously of all the secrets contained in this little crypt, in this leather-bound book, and in the hearts of those who buried the betrayed bride in this tomb.

“It won’t work,” he said, his voice cracking with fear. “Just let it go, Lottie.”

Lottie.

He couldn’t be that angry if he was calling me that.

Or maybe it was just a habit at this point.

After a tense staring match, he shuffled back and spun around, heading toward the exit. Humid sea air pinched my lungs as I trudged in his wake, keeping the book protected in my arms. If he didn’t want to see a way to save his son, then fine. I would be the one to do it.

I would do whatever it took to make sure Henry didn’t die even if it meant making Adam so furious that he left me for good.

Chapter 15 - Adam

Staring at my palm for the past half-hour wasn’t producing the effect I wanted. Some witch once told me I could find all the answers I needed if I just searched the lines of my palm.

Horse shit, I thought while clenching my fist. They’re all liars. None of them want to help. They just want their money and fame. That’s it.

Charlotte set a plate in front of me. “Adam, you should eat.”

Gods, it smelled amazing. What should have made me flip out actually enticed me, the steak tips soaked in steak sauce making me practically drool. Whatever she had said back at the cave about Marina jumped from my mind and disappeared into the early evening light.

It took every ounce of my strength to push the plate away. “No.”

“You can’t rest well if you don’t have a full stomach.”

“Maybe I don’t want to rest.”

She groaned. “Is it your turn to be the brat?”

“Excuseme?”

“You’ve done nothing but sulk since we got back from the cave. You didn’t even thank Sasha or Donovan for cleaning up the mess in here while you were gone.”

Recognition flooded my eyes as I looked around. Yeah, the place was scrubbed clean. The broken windows had been replaced. The splintered doors were patched up. Everything was pretty much back to normal.

Except for one thing.

“Yeah,” I sighed. “Just not hungry.”

She rolled her eyes. “That’s a lie.”

“You don’t understand what’s happening here, do you?”

“I know exactly what’s happening, Adam. You’re being a huge jerk about asking your ex for a little help. You won’t even consider it. That’s fuckingnutsto me.”

Now I really wasn’t hungry. “You’re not the one who had to take care of an infant by yourself.”

“No, but I know exactly how it feels to lose family.”
