And that was the end of my conversation with my son about Charlotte. Nothing had exploded. Nobody got confused. It was pure and simple. Much like him.

A knock drew me away from the table, revealing my alpha on the porch. I invited him inside and gestured to the couch for him to sit down. He sat on the ground with Henry and started helping with the puzzle.

“Are you feeling better, Henry?”

“Yes, alpha,” Henry replied with a grin. “Are you feeling okay?”

“I’m just fine. Thank you for asking.” Donovan glanced up at me. “What about you?”

I shrugged.

That was enough to get Donovan to send Henry from the room. Being that he was alpha, Henry didn’t oppose the request, though he sure did pout a bunch about it. Once he was gone, Donovan sat on the couch and patted the cushions next to him.

Within seconds, I was buried in his side. Anyone else would have probably made fun of the way I clung to my alpha like he was my saving grace. But in a lot of ways, he was. He settled my emotions, calmed the raging seas inside me that swelled with confusion. His heartbeat calmed me. His presence alone was enough to grant me peace.

A lot like what Charlotte did for me.

“I just think it’s funny that you went against my warning when I told you not to get lost and now you’re pushing her away when I support it,” he joked. “You confuse me, Adam.”

“Would I be your best friend if I didn’t confuse you?”

He hummed. “Yet to be seen.”

I rolled my eyes and sat up, sliding my fingers through my hair. Tugging on the strands gave me some relief. That headache was coming back. “I don’t know what to do.”

“You know she’s your mate.”

“I don’t know that.”

But that wasn’t true.

My primal side—the wolf that guarded and protected me—was well aware of the fact that Charlotte was meant for me. She had always been meant for me.

The fact that I continued to deny it was absurd.

He sighed. “You do know that. You marked her.”

“It was an accident.”

“Hickeys are an accident, Adam. You bit your mate. She’s yours.”

His words rang through my skull, cracking the layers of the fortress I had carefully erected over the last couple of days. I had nearly gotten Charlotte out of my system. And now my alpha wanted me to inhale her all over again?

“You confuse me,” I accused. “It’s like you’re telling me to stay and go at the same time.”

“Adam, what does your wolf say?”

I smiled smugly. “Woof.”

“Yes, that’s adorable,” he groaned with annoyance. “What does your wolf say about Charlotte?”

My smug grin faded into a dreamy smirk. “Woof.”

“She’s not just a fling, Adam. I hope you’ve realized that by now.”

“All I have are flings.”

He smiled weakly. “Not anymore. You’re mated.”
