“That just can’t be real. I thought Marina was my mate way back when and I was sorely mistaken about that. I can be wrong about this, too.”
“You’re not wrong.” He fixed me with a stern glance. “And more importantly, your alpha isn’t wrong.”
I bowed my head. “I didn’t mean to imply…”
“But you did.”
“Donovan, I’m sorry.”
He shook his head. “I’m not the one who needs to hear your apology. That’s Charlotte.”
“I don’t think she wants to talk to me.”
“Have you even tried?”
A groan rose in my throat but didn’t make an appearance. “No, I haven’t tried. I figured we both needed time to cool off.”
“That’s always a good idea. But you’re going to lose her if you don’t at least show her you’re trying.”
“You really think she’s my mate?”
He shrugged. “Ask your wolf. See what he says.”
“I don’t want to do that.”
“That wasn’t a request, Adam. Do as your alpha commands.”
Damn semantics. He knew I couldn’t argue with that. And the triumphant smile he wore told me he did it on purpose. While my wolf had already been whining the whole time about Charlotte, I had chosen to ignore him, thinking that he was just a horny mutt looking to get laid again.
But that’s not the case, is it?I thought.I’m drawn to Charlotte because of who she is as a person, not because of what she does for me.
And that was when it hit me.
I have to see her right now.
I jumped to my feet. “I need to go.”
“Wow, sit down,” Donovan suggested. I sank tentatively into the couch. “You need a plan. You’re not going in there without a strategy as you did in the catacombs.”
“Well, we didn’t exactly have a lot of time for planning that.”
He nodded. “I know. That’s why I want you to think carefully about this.”
“What’s there to think about? I walk in there and tell her my feelings.”
“Yeah, that’s great. What are you going to throw on the line?”
I frowned. “What?”
“You have to throw something down that proves it to her. You can’t just say it. I mean, youcouldsay it, but it’s better if you show her.”
“You mean like you did with Sasha?”
Irritation surfaced briefly before fading into a knowing glance. “Yeah, basically.”
“Is that why you came to talk to me?”
“Sasha might have had something to do with it.”
