I glared at him. “Donnie, really? I thought you were worried about me or something. Geeze.” I crossed my arms. “You think you know someone.”

“Idocare about you.” He rested his hand on my shoulder, serenity infecting my body from his touch. “Sasha just added some things to my list. I’m just making sure you’re heading in the right direction.”

“Did she ask about me?”

He smiled warmly. “What do you think, Adam?”

“I don’t know. You tell me.”

“I can’t.”

I fumed. “Seriously? What’s the point of having support if you’re going to be so cryptic about it?”

“You need to learn for yourself. I can’t hold your hand the whole way through.”

“No, but you can carry the torches when you want to chide me.” I nudged him playfully with my elbow. “Why are you like this?”

He shook my shoulder in a brotherly fashion. “Because I care about you. And you’re a giant idiot. Somebody has to watch your back.”

“Like I watch yours?”

“Exactly.”

I sighed. “Alright, help me come up with something, will you?”

“I’ll do my best.”

“You have the insider knowledge. Did Sasha tell you anything helpful?”

He smiled. “Plenty of things. Go get a pad of paper and a pen.”

“You got it, boss.”

Normalcy returned like the predictable rise of the sun. It encouraged me to wander into the kitchen to find what I needed to practice what I was going to say to Charlotte. This was unlike anything I had experienced in the past. Most of the hookups I had were exactly as Donovan described, flings.

And I was entirely ready to give that up in favor of something that would last.

As much as I wanted to flee, I forced my feet to carry me back to the kitchen. I clenched the pen in my hand and applied the tip of it to the page, watching words form as Donovan and I discussed the devil in the details.

The first thing on the list was an apology. Henry had been right to suggest it. And while it hurt to think that he knew more about my love life problems than I wanted him to know, it was reassuring that he had picked up the right lessons I had worked hard to teach him.

I mean, I couldn’t be a great dad if I didn’t show him how to put it into practice, right?

Within half an hour, the page was full of phrases. Working them into something cohesive that wouldn’t resemble an acceptance speech was difficult but manageable. When mid-afternoon rolled around, Donovan stood from the couch and said he had to head back. I called for Henry to say goodbye to him.

“If you want to come over later, Henry,” Donovan offered, “I’m sure your Aunt Sasha would love to give you some candy.”

Henry gasped. “Yes, please!”

I laughed as our alpha walked out the door. When we were alone, I couldn’t find the words to speak to my son. His reappearance still stunned me and I had trouble recalling how exactly I had gotten him back.

Everything was a blur at this point. But it didn’t seem to matter too much.

The cabin settled around us. It didn’t feel unsafe anymore, though a hint of paranoia lingered around the edge of my peripheral vision. Figures drifted past the windows. Closer inspection revealed Lucius and his wolves circling the ranch in rotating shifts. At every point of the day, someone was nearby, ready to sound the alarm should another attack occur.

At this point, we anticipated it.

Domingo and his clan won’t stop with Henry, I thought while hugging my son to my side. They’ll keep attacking us until they get what they want.
