Affection flashed in his eyes, the kind that could take down a full-grown elephant if it were a sleeping dart. He was hitting me with it now, sending me spiraling into a world of fuzzy feelings, butterflies, and rich soil. This was our garden. We were planting the seeds of our relationship right now, tending to them as we would continue to do in the future.

It was more than being mated to Adam. It was modeling a good relationship with Henry. When he got older, he would certainly seek a mate of his own. Whoever he chose would have to be someone that would treat him well and defend him when the time came.

After all, who knew how long these wars were going to last?

I frowned. “Gods, I feel like we went in circles with all that research.”

“We hardly uncovered anything.”

“We have a book of spells now.”

Adam hissed. “Actually, I might have sent that with Lorena.”

“Are you serious? Donovan let you do that?”

“That was so she would do the ritual.” He sighed while lowering his gaze. “I’m sorry, cherry. I know you probably wanted to look through it for clues.”

I sighed with defeat. “There probably wasn't much to find in there.”

“Maybe we can go back to that crypt. I saw scrolls and things there.”

I shook my head. “They probably know we were there. Our scent probably stunk up the place.”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

“But if we did have to go back, we know where it is.”

He nodded. “The map is real. It worked. Now if we could just figure out that weird artifact…”

I sighed. “See? We went in circles. We hardly figured out anything new.”

“Actually, I learned something new.”

“Really? What’s that?”

He smirked while reaching over me for the bedside table. After the drawer squeaked open, he rummaged inside it, rustling around a ton of things.

“Sorry,” he said with a mischievous grin while nudging my legs open. “It’s here somewhere. I found something cool.”

“Adam, if you want to bang, all you have to do is ask.”

He smirked. “I have another question for you first.”

I froze. “W-What?”

Before he could respond, a siren cut through the night. Both of us bolted from the bed and flew into action, racing into Henry’s room. Henry sat in the center of the bed with his hands over his ears, shaking with fear. I curled my body protectively around him.

“No,” I said firmly. “I’m not letting you get taken again.”

Adam wrapped his arms around us. “That won’t happen. None of us are getting taken.” He held my gaze while stating confidently, “We’re never getting torn apart again.”

Chapter 23 - Adam

“It can’t happen,” I growled while leading Charlotte and Henry into the living room. “It won’t happen.”

Charlotte grabbed my bicep. “Babe?”

“I promise, Lottie,” I said while cupping her face. “He’s not going anywhere.”
