“Never, baby.” He laughed while grabbing the pillow and wrestling it from my hands. “I thought you wanted to cuddle.”

I huffed while crossing my arms over my chest. “Until I found out you’re a jerk.”

“Baby, I hate to break it to you, but I’ve always been a jerk.”

I smacked my forehead. “I can’t win.”

“You already won.”

I cocked my eyebrow toward him. “And what did I win?”

He winked.

I sighed while whispering, “Don’t say it was you.”

Nearly every one of his teeth was visible with his beaming smile. His canines glimmered in the lower light, the same ones that had scraped the skin of my neck. I propped myself on my elbow while rubbing the area where he marked me.

His smile diminished but didn’t leave his face. “I still say I should give you a matching one.”

“Why?”

“Because it would look symmetrical.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Are you secretly a perfectionist?”

“Possibly. There’s a lot you don’t know about me.”

“Well, I can’t wait to discover everything.”

His grin stretched a bit. “I want to know everything about you, too.”

“You sure? It’s a lot of trauma.”

“I can handle trauma, remember? We’ve both been abandoned.”

Fear lanced my heart. It must have registered on my face because Adam dove into comfort mode, wrapping me tightly in his arms.

“Aw, baby. I didn’t mean to make you upset. I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I’m such a damn jerk sometimes.”

“No, it’s okay. It’s just…” I struggled to articulate what I was feeling. “It’s weird to hear it out loud like that.”

He nodded into my shoulder. “I shouldn’t have said it.”

“Adam, I don’t want you to deny it. You’re right. We’ve both experienced abandonment. It was a different situation, but the hurt was still present.”

“That’s why it was scary with you. I didn’t want my son to have to deal with that all over again. At least it happened when he was an infant, you know?”

I smiled weakly. “I know how it feels to be left as a child his age. It hurts.”

“I know you do, sweetheart.”

“But now we’re together, so we’re not going to worry about that, okay?”

He smiled warmly. “Yeah?”

“Yeah, I feel like we’re going to be together for a long time, Adam.”

“I’m glad you said that.”
