Confusion rattled my skull. First, they took my son. Now, they wanted the artifact. Was there ever going to be an end to what they wanted to take from us?

A frigid glare erupted from the vampire as he bowed his head. “Fine. Have it your way. I don’t mind spilling blood for my clan.”

But why?

The question permeated my being, echoing in every move I made. My defenses went up as the vampire attacked repeatedly, slicing the air on either side of me to make me dance. One of the other wolves intervened briefly, giving me a chance to catch my breath as I took a step back.

This was just another mess. And for what? A kid and a shiny piece of metal?

My eyes sought the object in question, failing to fully focus on the thing. Being able to see it would make this a lot easier.

Or did that matter at all?

Frustration boiled inside me as I raced back into the fray. The other wolf lunged out of my path, allowing me to tackle the mouthy vampire to the ground. I latched my teeth around his throat. It wouldn’t kill him, but it would satisfy my urge to destroy something.

Crack.

The pop vibrated my teeth and prompted a deathly growl. I kicked away the dagger and stepped over the body, slowly marching toward the other vampires that were attempting to corner Lucius and his wolves. The vampires were outnumbered now. Mr. Big Mouth behind me would surely wake up soon and flee, leaving his brethren to defend something that we hardly understood.

Donovan raced out of his home.

Alpha, no!I cried.Stay back!

More vampires tumbled in from the woods, joining the growing ranks. It was a trap. And we were about to get annihilated.

A vicious howl rang through the air that pierced me to my soul. All eyes turned to the hills beyond the trees where a massive black figure pointed its snout to the sky. Pale moonlight bathed the grass around the figure, revealing paws the size of my head each.

The black wolf, I thought. He’s real.

Eyes like fire observed us, blinking slowly and inhaling the scene. Even from all the way over there, the wolf could see us.

And then, it started running toward us.

The vampires went into a frenzy, energy renewed to fight for the artifact. Donovan and Lucius took a few at a time, knocking them out as best they could. The black wolf broke through the tree line and bounced into the nearest group of vampires, sending many of them flying into the air.

Vampires never could fly like in the old storybooks. It was refreshing to see those fantasy tales come to life because of what looked like a dire wolf right out of an urban legend collection.

The statuesque creature grabbed a vampire and launched him into the distance where the sound of him hitting the ground got swallowed up by the general chaos of the battle.

“Retreat!” one of them cried.

Victory burned in my chest. The fight had swung in our favor thanks to our mysterious savior, a black wolf from the hills who was supposed to just keep children from wandering in the night. With him leading the way forward, we fell into step, even Donovan taking a backseat while the black wolf slaughtered the remaining vampires.

One of them dropped the artifact. As the others hauled ass toward the trees, the black wolf roared after them, chasing them until they disappeared between the trunks. An eerie quiet had crawled over the yard. A few wolves stumbled from injuries, but most of us looked just fine.

Donovan trotted up to me and shifted. I followed his lead.

He grabbed my shoulder. “What the hell was that?”

“I don’t know.” I frowned while nudging him to turn around. “But it’s coming back, boss.”

Those paws could have crushed me if they wanted. The black wolf towered over the wolves gathered near the artifact, sending them skittering to Donovan. I stared at those fiery eyes in fright and awe, wondering if he was a shifter or a supernatural creature bred from a laboratory.

He opened his maw, dripping blood all over the ground as he scooped up the artifact.

And then the image was clear.

It was a medallion.
