“What the fuck,” Donovan gasped while stepping forward. “He can… he can fuckingtouch it.”

My face ached, causing me to touch the spot where the vampire injured me. A round wound in the shape of the medallion sat on my skin. “Why did it burn me?”

“I don’t know. Sasha and I couldn’t figure it out.”

“Who the hell is this wolf?”

Donovan stood his ground as the wolf approached. He was practically eye to eye with the beast. And while his legs trembled, his expression remained strong. “Who are you?”

The black wolf blinked impassively for a moment. He seemed more curious than anything, but it was odd how he observed us.

Like he was impressed.

The black wolf set the medallion on the ground. His fur rustled and then gave way to umber-black skin. His left eye was clouded blue while his right was the same fiery red as his wolf. He scooped the artifact from the ground and held it out to Donovan.

“Is this yours?” he asked in a raspy voice. He squinted at Lucius and the others who were approaching. “Call off your men.”

Donovan held out his hand to Lucius. “Get the guy some clothes, will ya?” He focused on the black wolf. “We have a lot to talk about.”

“My name is Matéo Renou,” the man said in a baritone voice. His eyes scanned the room. “I live in the mountains.”

“By yourself?” I blurted. Donovan glared at me. I smiled and said, “Sorry, alpha.”

Donovan sighed and turned to Matéo. “Answer the question.”

“Yes, by myself. I hunt in the valley nearby, but I don’t usually approach your…” He glanced around the room. “Your home.”

“Where did you come from?”

He shrugged. “My mother. Same as you.”

“How long have you been in the mountains?” Donovan scratched his head. “Why haven’t we ever seen you before?”

“I don’t socialize.”

I raised my eyebrows.Gee, we couldn’t tell.

Now that we were all clothed and partially fed, it was easier to try to figure out what just happened. The vampires wanted to take the medallion—the same artifact that none of us could touch but this wolf from the mountains can—and let slip the information about needing a pure wolf.

Which apparently wasn’t my son.

Although that was relieving to hear, that didn’t bode well for the next child. “Why did you help us?”

Matéo blinked at me as if he was just seeing me for the first time. “You needed help.”

“There’s a catch,” I said with a chuckle. “There’s always a catch with this sort of thing, you know?”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

Donovan sighed while reaching for a coffee mug. It was his third cup. “Okay, well, maybe we need to just set this down for the night.”

“It wasn’t a trap or a ploy,” I continued, unable to let it go. “So, what was it?”

“Drop it, Adam.”

I bowed my head. “Yes, alpha.”
