“Don’t call me a pup,” I complained, though I wasn’t mad about the term of endearment. It was cute. “I’m so much stronger than that.”

“You’re my strong mate,” she praised. “My hero.”

I grinned sheepishly. “Okay, that might be too much.”

“Like Superman.” She paused for a second while grabbing a fluffy blanket. “Actually, no. You can’t fly.”

I laughed. “Neither can vampires.”

“Why’s that so funny?”

“I’ll tell you later.” A yawn split my features. “Tell the gods I’m beat and I don’t want to be woken up unless it’s your sweet lips rousing me from my sleep.”

She grinned while bending over me to plant a kiss on my ear. She lingered for a long time, her scent fusing with my senses, the lilac waves washing over me repeatedly like the persistent breeze. All around me was Charlotte. And that’s what I wanted to keep surrounding me for the rest of my life.

I sat up. “I almost forgot.”

“No, lay down,” she insisted. “Right now.”

I grinned at her. “You going to take care of me, sweet cherry?”

She smirked while stroking my cheek, whispering, “Yes, sir.”

Chapter 24 - Charlotte

I woke up tangled in a mess of limbs. Sometime during the night, Henry had shifted into his wolf form, choosing to curl up under my arm. Even though his tail was flicking my nose, I smiled fondly, enjoying the way our hearts synchronized as I blinked myself awake.

Sunlight blessed the room with a divine tint. Adam snored on my right while Henryyippedlightly to my left. Both of them seemed utterly absorbed by sleep, content to take up as much space as possible on the mattress we had dragged into the living room late last night.

Gods, we were up so long, I recalled while gently peeling myself from the pile. Adam hugged my waist. I chuckled lightly, dropping back into my spot.I could use a little more sleep myself.

Henry twitched and then woke up, shifting back into a human child in the middle of a yawn. I smiled while pushing his hair out of his face. “You’re getting better at that, but you did it in your sleep.”

“Dad says it’s normal to change in my sleep.”

“Hormones,” Adam whispered sleepily. “That’s how it was for me, too.”

I nodded. “I remember when my wolf started scratching at me.”

Henry yanked the blankets over him. “Can you tell me about it while you make pancakes?”

I chortled. “Of course, silly. But you need to put clothes on first.”

“No!”

Henry nestled beneath the sheets, hogging them from his father. Adam groaned defiantly and tried to yank them back, chuckling when tiny howls erupted from beneath the blankets.

“Well, I wonder where Henry went,” I teased. “Did he become a bed bug or something?”

Henry barked. He flopped out of the blankets and zoomed down the hallway, skittering to a halt in his bedroom.

And colliding with something that hit the ground.

I sighed. “That sounded expensive.”

“You okay, son?” Adam called.

More rustling came from the room before Henry called out, “I’m fine!”
