Adam nodded. “That’s more important.”

I smiled fondly at him. “Having fun down there?”

“Not as much as I would if you were here.”

“Adam, I have pancakes to make.”

He grinned. “And I have a cherry to eat.”

My cheeks bloomed with embarrassment. While biting my lower lip, I drifted into the kitchen where I attempted to occupy myself with pancakes. Fresh blueberries sat in the fridge that would be perfect for the batter. I grabbed all the ingredients I needed and got to work, tossing the berries in once the batter was mixed.

Henry pushed a stepping stool toward the stove as I heated butter in the pan. He tentatively pulled the bowl toward him. “Can I help?”

I smiled. “Sure, but wash your hands first, okay?”

“Okay, Mom.”

My heart skipped a beat. The room spun slightly as I gripped the edge of the counter to keep from falling over. My mate touched my lower back to steady me.

“Easy,” he whispered. “Don’t panic.”

“He called me…”

He chuckled and kissed my temple. “I know. Is that okay?”

I nodded. Words swirled in my brain but refused to make an appearance in reality. I mean, what was I supposed to say to that?

“Stop thinking,” Adam whispered. “You think too much.”

“I think enough for all of us.”

He laughed while rubbing the center of my back. Soon, his soothing touch caused my muscles to relax. Henry returned and held up his hands for me to see.

I nodded. “Good job. The pan is hot enough for the batter. I’ll show you how to scoop it.”

A few minutes of instruction was all Henry needed to get going. Just like when I showed him how to throw the daggers, he picked up the technique quickly, showing me he was a natural chef. Once we had several pancakes piled on a plate, I sent him to the table with them along with a bottle of syrup.

“So,” I said to Adam once Henry was out of earshot. “What happened last night?”

“Well, it’s a long story, but…” He lowered his voice as he said, “The black wolf thing is real.”

My eyes widened. “What?”

“His name is Matéo and he lives in the mountains. He’s nearly the size of a dire wolf.”

“But he’s a shifter, right?”

He nodded. “Seems like any regular shifter. He’s just… huge.”

“You say that like you’re jealous.”

“Cherry, don’t tease me.”

I stuck out my tongue. “Sorry, I couldn’t help it. Things are nice this morning and I don’t want it to get too…”

“Serious?”

I nodded while frowning. “Is that selfish?”
