If he’s damaged, then what does that make me?I stepped into the kitchen and started preparing a sandwich.Heavens, am I trying to fix him?

“Rose,” he whispered from the doorway. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have tried leaving you.”

“You’re only saying that because I caught you.”

He sighed. “Fine. I’m only saying that because you caught me.”

“We’re a team now, okay?” I plated his sandwich and set it on the island counter. “We work together from now on.”

He lifted the plate with a crooked smirk. “All that anger and you still made me a sandwich?”

“You need to eat if you’re going to give me any good arguments.”

“Oh, so we’re not done fighting?” He snickered. “Little boxer wants round two.”

I bit angrily into my sandwich, ignoring his teasing gaze. That look made me want to fighteven moreand I didn’t understand the desire. It wasn’t like me to punch first and ask questions later. But Matéo brought it out of me. He boiled me so hot that I wanted to snap at him like a lobster trying to get out of the pot.

Admitting that it was enjoyable would only make him do it more. So, I kept my mouth shut. I ate my sandwich. I slumped into the breakfast nook overlooking the city. I stared at the dazzling lights, admiring the way the city came alive. Rochdale during the day was gorgeous, but at night, it was an enigma, a sparkling city gleaming with all sorts of amazing creatures.

It made me sad to think some of them were fighting.

Matéo sat across from me. “You said something about an action plan. What’s it going to be?”

“I thought you were in charge.”

“Yeah, well…” I listened to him scratch the stubble on his cheek. “I think having your input would be beneficial.”

I smiled. “You want my help?”

“In so many words.”

“Ah, but I want to hear those words.”

He grumbled something under his breath and then spoke with a lackluster tone, “I want your help, Rose.”

I bounced in my seat as I turned to him. “Great! I think we should take Adam and Charlotte with us along with a small team of wolves.”

“More wolves?”

“If this house is anywhere near the fortress Domingo mentioned, then we’re in a world of trouble.”

He frowned. “Why? It’s not like they can access the fortress if we get near it.”

“No, but he didn’t tell us that just totellus that, Matéo. He dropped it strategically.”

“What do you mean?”

I folded my hands together, recalling the meeting in full detail. “He wanted you to react. He deliberately plucked your strings so that you would appear hostile after he told us about this summer home that used to belong to his uncle.”

“So, if we found it and raided it, he could use it as fuel for the war.”

“Exactly. He wants us to find that fortress. He wants to make things worse.”

He shook his head. “I don’t see why.”

“It’s just another presentable reason to his clan. I don’t think all those vampires actually want to have a war.”

“You think there’s opposition within his ranks?”
