I hummed thoughtfully. “I don’t think we’re the only ones who want this to stop.”

“That means there’s definitely people who want it to keep going.”

“It’s a safe assumption. Having a team of wolves and having people who have already explored part of the coast would only give us better leverage.”

He nodded. “We’re walking right into the jaws of the whale.”

“Yep, and we need to make sure we have a way out that isn’t death.”

“Little boxer,” he whispered with a proud smile. “You’re brilliant.”

I blushed. “I’m just thinking logically here.”

“One of us has to.”

“I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

He reached across the table and took my hands, turning them over like they were too precious to be disturbed. “I don’t want to see you get hurt either.”

My chest caved. It wasn’t a profession of love, but it was something.

And I was going to hang on to it for as long as I could.

Chapter 19 - Matéo

The morning air pinched my nostrils, dashed with enough salt to ruin any perfectly cooked meal. Rose sat beside me with her window rolled all the way down and her face smashed against the wicked wind. The oceanic breeze swept through the cab of the truck and out my window, whipping violently around the metal vehicle.

In the rearview mirror sat Charlotte and Adam with a team of three wolves flanking either side of the road. This didn’t seem unusual for them. But for me, it was the weirdest thing I had ever done.

She loves me.

A headache stabbed the base of my neck. We had been driving for a couple of hours now, not stopping to check on anything. Time was on our side today, but it wouldn’t last long if we didn’t take advantage of the hour. The sun was just coming up.

She loves me.

My cheek twitched as my fingers fluttered over the steering wheel. I adjusted everything that could be changed twice, checking my mirrors too many times to count. Were it not for the rush of the wind, Rose might have heard me murmuring to myself.

She loves me. How can she love me?

Her confession had set me on edge. A man like me was too weighted by his past to accept anything more than genuine human kindness. But Rose seemed to think I was worthy of a lot. As if my life wasn’t dramatic enough.

I squeezed the steering wheel, feeling the leather crinkle beneath my grip. Rose patted my arm, drawing my attention as she rolled up her window.

“There,” she said while pointing to a cliff. “That’s where the betrayed bride is buried.” She paused for a second. “Or allegedly. All Charlotte reported was a statue.”

“It’s possibly a tomb,” I reasoned. “Vampires set up monuments just like humans. They’re rather emotional creatures.”

She snorted. “Couldn’t tell.”

“I can say the same of you, fleur.”

“And?”

I chortled. “Andnothing. I’m not complaining about your emotions. I’m…”

I’m just complaining about your emotions for me.

I shook my head. “Doesn’t matter. What’s next on the map?”
