There’s a soft thump above us, but I don’t wait to stick around and find out. I pick up Eloise and walk her into the large pantry closet off the kitchen. There’s an old latch on the door that locks, but there’s no way of knowing if it will hold up to any scrutiny. It was probably new when this place was built back in the 1800s.

Elle pushes me against the door and unbuttons my jeans, pushing them off my hips and down to the floor. Her hand rubs up and down the thick length of my cock, and I have to bite my lip to keep from making a sound.

“Over here.” Eloise grabs my waist and turns me, so I sit down on some old bench that’s built into the wall.

She kicks off her boots and pushes down her leggings and panties. Her long sweater barely brushes the tops of her thighs, and I’m so hard that a stiff wind would have me coming, like a teenage boy with his first boner.

“I’m warning you now,” Elle whispers, walking over and straddling my lap. “This may be how we do this most of the time—quick and quiet. But when we have the time and privacy, I’m going to make you see God.”

“I’m already in heaven,” I say, lifting her hips and guiding my dick to her entrance.

Slowly, she lowers herself down on me. Elle’s lips meet mine, muffling the moan of pleasure that courses through me. I grab her hips in a near-bruising grip and guide her up and down. The friction of our bodies moving against one another increases the pleasure. I lift my hips, needing to push in deeper and root myself inside her.

Eloise whimpers when I hit just the right spot. I do it again and again, harder and harder. She holds onto my shoulders to keep from falling, but I’d never let her fall. I will always be the one to protect her.

“Elle,” I grunt, feeling the cusp of my release but wanting her there with me. “Come for me.”

She tightens her inner muscles around me as I thrust one last time. We tumble together over the edge into our shared release, clinging to each other in this free fall. I’ve never felt this way before, and I know I’ll never feel this way with anyone else.

CHAPTER9

Silas

The following morning, I’m able to sneak out with the help of Eloise before anyone else is awake. My plan was to shower, change clothes, and come back over when no one would be the wiser. But then an emergency call came in about an overturned semi-truck on the highway. When I couldn’t get a hold of Cam to take the job, I needed to head to work. I promised Eloise I’d be there as soon as I could.

As I’m working, Elle and the kids have been sending me pictures and videos of what they’ve been doing all morning, like decorating the Christmas tree and eating snowman pancakes. It kills me that I can’t be there, but I’m counting down the minutes until I can see their smiling faces.

The way I already see days, weeks, and even years into the future of us as a family fills me with happiness. So much so that I don’t even mind the freezing weather as I finish up on the wreck.

Just as I get into my truck to head back toward the shop, my phone starts ringing.

“I’m leaving now,” I say by way of greeting. “But I’ll need to stop back at my place for another shower.

“I’m going to kill him,” Eloise says.

“Wait, what? Who are you going to kill?”

“My brother. And this time, you won’t be able to stop me.”

“Hang on,” I turn the key to start the engine. “Start from the beginning. What happened?”

“Apparently, Cam slept with Romy last night.”

“Right.” I nod. “We knew that.”

“Yeah, well, what we didn’t know was that he was only using her to get a review for the inn. Like he thought that I couldn’t get one from Romy by myself. We talked a lot while she was here, and I was going to ask her, but I didn’t want her to think I was using her.”

I run my hand over my face. This can’t be right. I saw how he was looking at her. There is no way he was using her only for the review. It may have started out that way for him, but Cam is the last guy on earth who would do such a thing.

“Is she still there? Maybe we could explain to her—”

“No.” Elle cuts me off. “She’s already left. And from the latest pictures on her website, it looks like she’s at the Pine Tree Resort.”

Fuck.

That doesn’t make things easier, but it’s not hopeless. A crazy idea starts to formulate in my head. I don’t want to tell Eloise just yet unless I make a colossal fuck up and make things worse. But Romy was Elle’s last chance to save the inn. It’s going to have to be worth the risk.

We discuss what happened a bit more, and I bring her back to having some hope before we hang up. Something needs to be done. I back up my truck and head down the highway where the Pine Tree Resort is located. If there’s a chance I can fix this, I will.
