“I love this, but you do have to get out of here; my father will kill you.”

I laugh and walk into her ensuite bathroom. I turn on the shower and rinse off. A few minutes later, I tug on my jeans, leaving her sleeping soundly in my t-shirt. I kiss her forehead and slowly pry open the door.

I stop outside Bre’s door; even though everything tells me not to, I open it slowly. She’s bathed in moonlight, her dark hair like a curtain over her pillow. She’s fast asleep. I step into the room and shut the door, settling in a chair, just watching her. I run my hands over my face. What the fuck is wrong with me? But God is she perfect when she sleeps, an angel. I watch her until my eyelids get heavy.

Iwake up startled. The bedside clock reads five a.m. I have an hour until Savanna comes pounding down my door. I sit up, yawn and stretch. Something in the corner of my room catches my eye. What the hell? Denton is sleeping in my chair. I rip off my sheets and shake him awake.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m up.” He says sleepily, then smiles when he looks up at me. That goofy, lopsided smile that made me think he was cute once. He's shirtless, and I can’t help but notice the muscles on his arms and torso.

“What are you doing here?” I whisper.

He reaches out and wraps his arms around my waist, pulling me toward him. He places his head on my belly, and unwanted butterflies swarm inside me. “Watching you sleep,” he says sleepily. “Kitten, don’t be angry at me, please.”

His hold on me is tight, and I realize that the nightie I have is so flimsy he can feel every part of me.

“Denton, you have to go now. And I’m not angry at you.”

He looks up at me, then kisses my belly, loosening his hold on me. “Promise.”

“I promise.” I step away, and he stands, stretching. “I’ll hold you to that.”

I shake my head as I watch him walk to the door and leave. Now that is the kind of shit that has to stop right now. He is dating Savanna. I heard them last night, so why the hell is he here? Was he here all night watching me sleep? We are friends, yes, well, we used to be, but there are lines that I cannot allow either of us to cross. The way he looked at me now, how he held me and kissed my stomach, it’s too intimate.

After we surf, Anna and I sit on the beach and talk like old times. It feels normal now that Denton is not around to cause tension between us.

“I like him a lot, Bre,” she turns to me. I see the sparkle in her eye, and I know that she feels a whole lot more.

I smile. “And I can tell that hereally, reallylikes you,” I smirk, nudging her.

“Oh my God, you heard? Do you think anyone else did?” Her hands cover her mouth.

“Chill, they’re in the other wing.” I laugh.

“It isn’t justthat. He makes me happy, you know. After the assholes I dated in the past, Denton is a breath of fresh air.”

I smile because I know that he is a good guy. He saved my life, I want to tell her, but this is her moment, and I don’t want to taint it with my nightmares.

“You promise to try to get along with him?” She looks at me pleadingly.

I think about that, my eyes are drawn to the ocean, and I nod. “I can do that.”

She hugs me until we’re rolling in the sand, just like when we were kids. Denton is my best friend. It is not going to be difficult to be his friend.

“So,” I start, “I may have invited a friend over for the bonfire.”

She gasps. “You have been holding out on me, haven’t you?”

“Okay, so don’t be mad, but Nate and I have been chatting for a while. We were thinking of maybe giving the dating thing a shot.”

“Nate. As in my cousin, Nate?” She frowns. “I thought he was gay.”

“God, Anna! No, he isn’t. He’s just a little, flamboyant.”

“That’s a term for it,” she clicks her tongue.
