I laugh out loud because we spent countless conversations speculating about Nate and his sexual orientation. “He is not gay, okay. And he’s coming over, so don’t be a bitch.”

“Fine. If you want to date a gay guy, I am okay with that.”

I push her to the ground and straddle her, tickling her sides until she begs for mercy.

“But seriously, I love you, and Nate is a good guy, gorgeous too, so I’m happy if you are.”

“I love you too, Anna.”

The Nate we knew is all grown up and mouth-wateringly gorgeous. He is so fucking hot. I have no idea why it took us this long to get together. He’s not the flamboyant boy we knew, but a sexy ass man now. He’s a year older than Savanna and me. When I open the door for him, he leans in and kisses my cheek, and I literally swoon.

“Nathan, my boy.” Mr Julius greets his nephew. “It is so good to see you.”

“Uncle Keaton, it’s been too long.” He hugs his uncle.

Nate walks around greeting everyone. I can tell that Anna is a bit taken aback. I mean, he is nothing like either of us imagined.

He greets Denton, to be met with a cold hello and a handshake that I can tell is a bit too firm.

“I’d fuck him if he wasn’t a relative,” Anna whispers when we’re alone.

“Anna! Oh, God!”

“Did you see the size of those arms?” She continues. “He is smoking.”

We’re carrying marshmallows and snacks with us and heading down to the beach with our Moms. The men haul the cooler bags with beers, cider, and wine. We aren’t allowed to drink any, but we do it anyway. Our parents know it too.

Nate hands me a cup and settles next to me on a blanket in the sand. We look at the flames, and he wraps an arm around me. “Why’d it take us this long?” he whispers.

I giggle because his breath tickles my skin. “I don’t know.”

“You look beautiful, by the way. Even more beautiful than I remember.”

“Is that right?”

He smirks, and a dimple forms on his cheek. Oh my God, he is sexy.

He leans in and kisses my cheek. “That’s right.” I feel flutters in my stomach. The parents in the neighborhood are at one bonfire while we teens sit around another.

I shiver a little. “You cold?”

“A little,” I admit. Nate pulls out another blanket, wraps it around my shoulders, moving so I’m between his legs. I settle against his chest and sip on my cider. Every now and then, he kisses my cheek or my ear, and the chemistry between us is undeniable.

The sky is full of stars, and I smile, looking up at them.

“Did you know that every star you see in the night sky is bigger and brighter than our sun?”

I tilt my head up. “I didn’t.” I look up at the sky again. “That’s fascinating.”

“And contrary to what it may seem like, you cannot actually see a million stars. A couple thousand at most.”

I laugh out loud. “You smart ass.”

My eye catches Denton’s across the fire. His hands are up Savanna’s shirt as he plays with her tits right there in front of everyone. She’s tipsy, bordering drunk, enjoying every minute of it. He never struck me as the brazen sort, but here he is, being a fucking bastard. I realize that I can’t wait for this holiday to be over, and I can’t wait to be away from Denton when he goes off to college.

“I’d like to see you when we get back home.” Nate brings me back to the present and the sweet guy who's sitting with me telling me about stars.

“I’d like that. When do you have to head back?”
