“In the morning,” he says. It’s strange, but it saddens me that he isn’t going to be around.

Denton and Savanna stagger over to us. “Hey, we’re heading back to the house. You guys okay here?” Anna slurs.

“I think we’ll be out here a while longer,” I tell her.

Denton glares at me, but I look away. In a few minutes, he’ll be balls deep inside my best friend, so he has no right to say anything to me.

Around two a.m. Nate walks me to my bedroom door, kisses me like it’s our first and last kiss, but refuses to come in when I invite him. “You, Brianna Kent, deserve to be dated without a guy expecting anything in return.”

He kisses me on my cheek and strolls down the hall to his bedroom. My heart flutters, and I think I might be in love.

I open my door and groan when I see a shirtless Denton in my chair again. He’s asleep. His chest rises and falls in a rhythm that is akin to music. I want to write a song about the boy who watches me sleep. I smile, picking up a blanket and draping it onto him. His hair is a tousled mess, and I know she’s likely run her hands through it for hours. I don’t understand why the thought irritates me.

“Good night, Duke,” I say, climbing into bed after changing.

Iwatch the two of them kissing. Nate’s lips on hers enrage me. I don’t have a right to be jealous. Of course not. But I sure as hell am.

“Aren’t they the cutest?” Savanna swoons, and it makes me want to gag.

“She can do so much better than him. I get a weird vibe off that guy.”

She narrows her eyes at me. “You don’t know him like we do, Denton. Nate is a sweet guy. I mean, he is related to me,” she bats her eyelids and kisses my cheeks.

“I’m going shopping with my mom today. You gonna be alright here on your own with my dad and Bre’s? Those two aren’t going to offer much company,” she grins at Bre and Nate.

“Yeah, I’ll probably hit the beach, sketch a little.”

“Sounds fun, babe,” she places a chaste kiss on my lips when I walk her out to her mother’s SUV. Bre’s mom rides shotgun.

I grab my sketchbook and head out to the beach. I have a structure in mind, and this setting is perfect for it. I don’t know how long I’ve been out there, lost in lines and shading.

“That’s brilliant,” she says, taking a seat next to me. “I can almost see it, over there,” she points to a vacant spot on the hills. I don’t tell her that it’s exactly where I envisioned it.

“Done tongue fucking Nate?”

“Denton, you do realize that you’re acting like a jealous asshole right now?”

I keep sketching, ignoring her insult. She stands, lifting her dress above her head, causing me to pause and simply watch her. She flings it onto the sand and makes a dash for the water. My attention is no longer on the paper but the girl in the water. She swims through the waves, and I can’t help but smile. I turn the page and start to draw her. I don’t draw people. I draw buildings and structures, but Bre is the kind of girl that needs to be captured on paper for life.

“Come on in here,” she shouts. I set my sketchbook down, remove my t-shirt and walk toward the edge of the water.

“You scared of water, Duke?” She teases.

“Not as scared as I am of you in that bikini,” I laugh.

She rolls her eyes and disappears under a wave. I shriek like a girl when the water touches my skin. She comes up for air a few inches away from me, our eyes locking for a second before she looks away.

“Why do you watch me sleep?” she shouts above the roar of the water. I don’t expect the question, so I dive underwater. Why do I watch her?

She’s waiting for me when I come back up. “Because you’re beautiful when you sleep,” I say honestly.

She stares at me, running her hands over her wet hair. Her breasts are a distraction—angry clouds roar above us. “Maybe we should head back,” I suggest.

“You shouldn’t be doing that, Denton. You have a girlfriend, who happens to be my best friend.”
