“What friend?”

“James,” I tell him, walking away, leaving him standing there like the fool he is. James Graham is one of Anna and my friends from way back. We’re Facebook friends, and when he heard I was in town, he asked to get together. I agreed.

I make my way to the makeshift bar James and I agree to meet at. He’s already sitting at a small table, cocktails ordered. He stands when he spots me.

“Brianna Kent, you are as gorgeous as I remember.” And so is he. “I hope you don’t mind me ordering you a cocktail,” he asks.

“Of course not,” I tell him. “It is so good to see you.” I see, Asshole lurking around from the corner of my eye. I ignore him. I like that he’s bothered.

James and I drink into the evening. The parents have taken Ty home, waving goodbye to me. I am so happily buzzed.

“So, if you’re not interested in him, why do you want to make him jealous?” James’s brow quips up. I have told him the whole sordid tale.

I failed to mention to Denton that James is gay and happily married.

“I just want him to suffer, you know. He deserves that. Little Bitch.” I say loud enough for him to hear. He hasn’t left a table in the corner.

“Babe, the man is sitting there the entire day just watching you, wanting to make sure you’re okay; cut him some slack.”

“Oh, you’re no fun,” I slap his arm.

“My husband and I had a rough start. He was my boss's son and pretending to be straight as a needle. We hid our relationship for almost a year, and that in itself took a toll. Can you imagine me watching him continue to date a woman just to make sure his family wouldn’t suspect anything? And can you imagine the scandal when his family found out?”

“I bet it was tough.”

“Tough? They disowned him, threw him out on his ass, fired me. We had to start from the ground up.”

“Oh God, that is just crazy.”

“Tell me about it. But, we made it through because we loved each other, and we knew that sometimes love does conquer all.” He places a hand on mine. “If you love him, don’t waste time being angry and bitter. We don’t have enough time for that.”

I lean in and kiss James right on the mouth, my eyes brimming with tears.

“Go get him,” he tells me.

I walk through the growing night crowd, wobbling slightly. Denton isn’t at the table he sat at the entire day. I spot him walking away.

“Denton!” I shout, but he continues to weave through the crowd. “Denton!”

He stops, and I finally catch up with him, slightly out of breath. “You proved your point Bre, I get it. You want nothing to do with me.”

I stand on my tiptoes and wrap my arms around his neck, kissing him, my tongue slipping through his lips until it collides with his. He lifts me by the ass until I’m wrapped around his waist, and we kiss in the middle of the sea of people. When we break apart, he cocks a brow. “What about James?”

“James is probably on his way home to his husband.”

We laugh as he spins me around.

There’s a reason you should sleep on your big decisions because, in the morning, things seem a whole lot clearer. Those are my first thoughts when I wake up to the feel of heavy arms across my middle. I try to pry them off me, but he tugs me close, a very solid morning glory pressing against my ass. “Denton,” I whisper, not wanting anyone to overhear me if they walk past my room.

He groans and nuzzles his nose in the crook of my neck. “You smell beautiful, like cinnamon.”

“You have to get out of this bed before someone sees you here,” I scold.

“Let them see. I don’t care, baby.”
