“Okay, so I think we should do something fun today. I mean, all we ever do is have sex, and I’d like to make other memories.

“Like?” Her green eyes look at me in interest.

“Let’s take Ty to the beach, and we can have a picnic.”

“I like the sound of that. But, won’t it seem a bit strange that we’re doing that together? We’re supposed to hate each other.”

“I don’t want to pretend to hate you, kitten. I can’t do that. We will deal with questions when they’re asked. For now, get ready and leave the rest to me.”

I sneak out of her room and check in on Ty, and I’m surprised to see Lilian in there, bouncing him on her lap. “Hi, Mrs. Kent,” I say awkwardly.

“Oh, you’re old enough to call me Lilian, Denton, so please do.” She gives Ty a kiss on the cheek. “He really does look like his mom, doesn’t he?” She smiles at him sweetly. “I hope you don’t mind. I heard him fussing and figured I’d check on him before Amanda does.”

She knows.

“Mrs-Lilian, I just want you to know that my intentions with Bre are honorable.”

“I know they are, but you two have a long road ahead of you, and it isn’t going to be easy. I don’t know everything, but I do know that you love my daughter. I can see it when you look at her.”

“I do,” I tell her.

“We all make mistakes Denton, you and Bre never should have done what you did, but I think you both know that. What happens in the dark almost always comes out in the light.”

She stands and hands my son to me. “It’s not going to be this simple with Amanda. You need to brace yourself for the real storm.”

I sit on the rocker that she just vacated and look down at Ty. “I wish things were easier, Ty. I wish I loved your mama more and hurt her less.” I hug him close.

I carry him downstairs after a while, and Amanda is sitting at the island sipping coffee. “There’s my little man,” she stands when she sees him. “Good morning, Denton, and you, my little sugar plum.” Kissing him on the cheek she places him in a high chair.

“Morning, Amanda,” I say, pouring myself a cup of coffee and taking a seat at the island. “It’s a beautiful day again, so I was thinking of taking this little man to the beach for a picnic. I’ve asked Bre to join us.”

“That’s nice. It’s great that you two seem to be getting along,” she says, smiling. Yeah, I don’t know if she’ll be as pleased if she knew how well we get along.

“Denton.”

“Yeah?” I turn toward her.

“The walls don’t have ears, but I do, and I know that you and Brianna are, well, more than friends.”

I look away, then back at her. “And how do you feel about that?”

“Not as upset as I thought I would. I know you loved my daughter. I also know that your relationship wasn’t perfect. She used to talk to me about the fighting and all of that. But no marriage is without its problems. I just want you to know that you don’t have to worry about Keaton and me. You deserve to be happy. Savanna would have wanted that.”

Would she? I can’t help but wonder.

“I did love Savanna, and she will always be a part of our lives, through my boys. But yes, I’m in love with Brianna too.”

She smiles. “Then you shouldn’t treat her like a kept woman, Denton. She deserves better.”

She leaves the kitchen, and I think about what she said. I agree with the last part, which is why I will not pretend that I’m not in love with Bre any longer.

Bre lies under an umbrella with Ty sleeping on her chest.

“I can’t help but be jealous of the kid,” I say, and she throws her hat at me.

“I spoke to your Mom this morning, and Amanda,” I tell her, tracing her name in the sand.

“About?” Bre asks.
