“Uh… are you guys serious?” she asked. “This is the amount you’re offering?”

“Not enough?” I asked.

“No, not that at all. It’s… it’s more than generous. Just seems like, um, a lot for someone who’s not a professional nanny.”

“We’re willing to pay whatever it takes for the right person,” Marcus said. “And right now, we’re all in agreement that you seem to be her.”

I nodded. “Right. And, naturally, we’d cover any expenses that you incur during the job.”

“Plus,” Adam said, “If all goes well, we’d be happy to include a bonus at the end.”

Aubrey let out a long puff of air, setting the piece of paper on the table and sitting back. I could sense she was trying to process everything. Once the shock of the news settled, however, a different look came over her face, one more thoughtful, as if she were working out all of the logistics there on the spot.

We collectively held our breath, trying to silently will her into saying yes.

Chapter 11

Aubrey

Iwas still trying to process not only the job offer but the compensation offer as well.

Damned if it wasn’t hard to focus on the subject at hand with four gorgeous as hell brothers sitting across from me.

“She looks like she needs some more time to think about it,” Marcus said. It seemed he rarely spoke, and when he did, it was in a low, gruff voice. He was so different from Tyler, who exuded warmth and eagerness. Nevertheless, they were both sexy in their own ways.

“No, that’s not necessarily true.”

Part of me wanted to jump up and down and accept it right then and there. The amount they were offering me was insane, far more than I would’ve guessed and more than enough to keep my head above water during the winter. Between that and what I’d make from the llama wool over the next few months, I’d have enough cash to hire hands come spring, which meant that I’d have the chance to get the ranch up and running in order to start making a profit.

It almost seemed too good to be true. I’d make a ton of money, and all I had to do was hang out with two adorable kids. Sure, it’d be plenty of responsibility, but I felt up to the task.

“Then you want to do it?” asked Adam, his eyebrows arched.

I pursed my lips. “Let me ask you this—how am I supposed to take care of the animals on the farm if I’m going to be performing nanny duties? Aggie’s a hard worker, but she’s still only one person.”

“When do you take care of the animals?” Tyler asked. “Probably in the morning?”

“Yeah, usually. I wake up bright and early and feed them, make sure they’re not sick or anything like that. Aggie does it in the afternoon, then I check on them once more at night. There aren’t many others besides the llamas, but it’s still a lot to do.”

“Believe me, we know,” Mac said. “We’ve got our share of animals over at Thousand Acres, but we do have a few hands on staff to help us.”

“Then you get it. Doesn’t leave much room for nannying.”

“What if we bring them here?” Adam asked. “You wake up and tend to the animals, and we drop the kids off after. Then you bring them home in the evening, or we pick them up. It’s only a ten-minute drive door to door, not a long commute by any means.”

“Right,” Mac said. “Bring them over around, say, six, feed ‘em, bathe ‘em, get them ready for bed, then you’re done.”

It would be a lot of work, for sure. All the same, with the amount of money they were offering me, it seemed like a steal.

“That’s definitely doable. As long as we’re all willing to work with one another’s schedules if anything comes up.”

“Of course,” Mac said. “As long as you’re able to be consistent and reliable, we can make modifications to the schedule now and then.”

“How long do you normally spend on your freelance work?” Marcus asked in his gruff way.

“God, too much time. I get to it when I can, either in the mornings or after all of the work is done. Sometimes I stay up pretty late.”

“Maybe I’m biased,” Adam said, a slight twinkle in his eye. “But this arrangement is starting to look better and better. You’ll be able to work a normal set of hours and get some beauty sleep come nighttime instead of squinting at your MacBook Air at midnight moving around numbers in Excel.”
