“Hey,” I said, raising a finger and smirking. “You’re totally wrong… I use a ThinkPad.”

Adam laughed, shaking his head.

“Got another question,” Mac said. “How would you feel about the twins staying here every now and then? Like, spending the night. I haven’t taken the tour of this place, but it looks like you’ve got more than enough space.”

“That sounds like a question that you’d ask someone who accepted the job,” I said. “Keep in mind that I’m still thinking about it.”

He smiled. I hadn’t noticed it before but seeing the light smile Mac wore in that moment made me realize how rarely he shared such an expression. The smile was warm, and just a little cocky.

“I know you’re still thinking about it,” he said. “But I’ve got a darn good feeling on which side you’re going to come down.”

“Someone’s a little confident. Some might saycocky.”

“Just got a feeling in my gut. And I always trust my gut.”

“You’d be perfect for the job,” Adam said. “Henry loves you, and Hattie already seemed on the verge of warming up to you. Trust me, even getting her to the verge is a process that takes weeks. You did more in ten minutes than what most people have been able to do in hours. You’ve got the touch.”

I sighed, shaking my head.

“You alright over there?” Tyler asked. “We can give you some time to think about it.”

“No, it’s not that. I don’t know; I can’t believe I’m right on the precipice of agreeing to do this.”

“Then that begs the question,” Mac said. “What can we do to, well, push you right over the edge of that there precipice?”

I grinned, leaning in and placing my hands on the edge of the table.

“Two words. Signing bonus.”

Mac grinned, sticking out his big, rough hand, a hand that I wanted right between my thighs.

“Deal.”

Chapter 12

Marcus

One week later…

“Man, you look like shit, bro. I mean, even more than usual.”

I grumbled as I ran my hand through my hair. Didn’t matter that I’d spent as long as I had in the service, where getting up at the ass crack of dawn was part and parcel of the whole thing. No, a nice morning for me was waking up at around eight, easing into things with a strong coffee and a good breakfast before work.

Tyler grinned at me from across the kitchen, looking bright-eyed and bushy tailed as he always did in the morning.

“Keep it to yourself, man.”

He laughed, shaking his head as he poured a little bit of fresh cream from one of our cows into his coffee. Tyler raised the bottle of ivory-white cream, waggling it a bit side to side in an enticing way.

“Gimme that,” I said.

He tossed the bottle over and I caught it, taking the lid off my thermos and pouring some of the cream into my coffee, the color lightening instantly.

“You’re grouchier than normal. What’s the story?”

I sipped my coffee, my eyes on the kitchen window over the table. I could tell by the gray sky above that we were in for a chilly day. Not to mention that the forecast had said to expect a bit of snow that morning.

“Didn’t get much sleep,” I said. “Too busy getting ready for the mission.”
