“Good job, kids,” Adam said. I looked up to see that he was on the stairs, a glass of whiskey in his hand. He stood against the railing in his effortlessly sexy way, a smirk on his face and one boot crossed over the other. “Next step is getting ready for your bath.”

The kids moaned, Adam raising a finger and his eyebrows.

“Do we have to?” Henry asked.

“You bet your little butts you do. Now, get on up there and wait for me, OK? I’ve got something to talk about with Miss Aubrey.”

“Is she going to give us baths?” Hattie asked.

“Sure. Let us have a grown-up conversation first, alright?”

That got the kids in gear. They hurried up the stairs and down the hall, the little pitter-patter of feet sounding as they rushed to the bathroom.

Adam trotted down the stairs. Before too long he was close enough that I could smell the whiskey on his breath, an impossibly sexy scent.

“The rest of the guys are planning the mission,” he said. “They’ve got it just about under control, so I figured I’d come down and give you a hand with the bath.”

“Thanks. I mean, I can handle it on my own for sure.”

He raised his palm, shaking his head. “I insist. It’s crummy out and you’ve probably had a long day.”

My instinct was to object. “Sure. Let’s do it.”

He swept his hand toward the stairs. “After you.” We headed up, and I found myself lost in his looks and his smile and the smell of his whiskey. “How’s Aggie?”

“Good. I was kind of glad to get out of the house, actually.”

“Problem over in paradise?”

“Nah, she’s got this girl coming over tonight. Don’t want to cramp her style, you know?”

“Totally understandable.” We reached the top of the stairs and he paused. I could tell that there was something on his mind, something that he wasn’t sure how to say. “Speaking of cramping one’s style… you mind sticking around when we’re done with the bath?”

“Sticking around? What’s up?”

That strange look stayed on his face. The guys were decisive without fail, so it was extra strange to see one of them look so hesitant and unsure of himself.

“The four of us have something we want to talk to you about.”

“Is it bad?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Not bad. Just… something that needs to be discussed.”

Was I getting fired? As we made our way to the bathroom, I struggled to come up with an explanation for why all of the guys would want to have a sit-down with me like that. Being paranoid didn’t come naturally to me, but everything about the way Adam was speaking and acting put me ill at ease.

Those feelings went away the second I stepped over the threshold of the bathroom. The twins were in the middle of the big, spacious room, already in the process of stripping off their clothes.

“Alright, dudes,” Adam said, stepping over to the tub. “We ready to get clean?”

They let out their cries of excitement in response as they got out of the rest of their clothes.

Adam turned on the faucet, getting the water nice and warm as I poured some bubble bath gel into it. I laughed as the kids clambered over the rim of the tub, wasting no time splashing in the water.

“So!” Adam said, sticking his hands under the water and getting them wet. “How was the day over with Miss Aubrey?”

“Amazing!” Hattie said. “Extra amazing!”

“That’s her new favorite word,” I said, sitting down next to Adam beside the tub and rolling up my sleeves. “Everything’s amazing.”
