“Uh, you hear what you just said, bro?”

“What do you mean?”

He grinned. “You just said the L word.”

My first instinct was to tell him that he was wrong, that I hadn’t said it.

But I had.

There was no doubt, however, that it was how I felt.

“I feel the same way,” Mac said.

Marcus nodded. “Me too.”

“I mean,yeah,” Tyler added.

I chuckled. “Well, this is certainly some new intel.”

“But it doesn’t change anything,” Mac said, his serious expression returning. “We’ve got danger coming our way, and we need to be ready for it.”

“How would Balaban get here?” I asked. “Winds are already picking up outside, and I really doubt he’s dumb enough to try a helicopter infil during one of the worst blizzards on record.”

I turned my attention to the big, round window over the desk at the back of the office. The dark clouds were growing nearer, snow beginning to fall in the distance. The branches of the nearby trees whipped back and forth, the wind already picking up.

“He’ll drive,” Mac said. “Easier to do, safer. Assuming he’s coming in from the NYC region, that’s about a six-hour drive. He’ll want to supply up and take his time, so let’s say twelve hours before any kind of attack.”

I peeked out into the den to check on the twins, watching them play and watch their movie, both blissfully unaware that possible danger was near. The idea of anything happening to them was too much to bear.

“What about Aubrey?” Marcus asked. “Animals or not, we need to get her and Aggie over here.”

“We’ve got space in the barns for her animals. It’ll take some doing to get them all over here, but we could do it.” I sat forward after I spoke. “Not to mention I told her that we’d fill her in on everything about our work.”

“That’s as good a time as any to tell her about Balaban,” Tyler said. “I’ll try to smooth talk her into coming.”

Mac leaned forward. “Once she’s over here, we can start talking about how we’re going to plan for the attack. Adam, check the weapon stash and make sure we’re ready to rock if it comes to that. Marcus, check the security system, then get the animal transport truck geared up. Tyler, you make the call to Aubrey. We need to get moving now before this weather gets any worse.”

We had our duties. It was time to act.

Chapter 30

Aubrey

“What’s the reason they wanted to come here?”

Aggie and I were seated at the kitchen table, mugs of tea in front of us.

How the hell could I even begin to answer her question?

“Don’t tell me they all want one-on-one time. Or four-on-one.” She leaned in with a mischievous look on her face.

“Aggie!” I playfully slapped her hand.

“Seriously! I mean, I know that you guys are all a thing, but you’ve never told me how it all works.”

“You’re awfully curious about the logistics of our bedroom activities for a lesbian.”

“Hey, sexual orientation has nothing to do with it. I’m just curious how one woman can be with four guys at the same time.”
