I laughed. “You want me to draw you a chart or something? Label everything?”

“You laugh, but that might help.”

I sat back, thinking the matter over. “You would think it’s complicated. But… it’s not. In fact, it’s easy – the most natural thing in the world. We just get together and start kissing and…”

I trailed off, just the mention of being with all of the guys enough to make me tingle down below.

“We can talk about it later,” she said, getting up. “And wewill– make no mistake. But the guys are here.”

I rose from my seat, making my way over to the kitchen window. Three cars pulled up – the Tahoe, the F-350, and a huge cargo truck with a compartment in back big enough for animals.

What the hell was going on?

The guys climbed out of the vehicles, the twins with them.

“Looks like the whole crew’s here,” Aggie said.

It seemed a little much for just a chat. Either way, I opened the door and greeted them. Off in the distance, the clouds grew closer and closer.

“Hey!” I said to the twins, both of them running up to hug me.

“George is coming over!” Henry said. “And Larry too!”

I was confused. “George is coming where?”

I let the kids go and turned my attention to the guys.

“You all want to tell me what’s going on?” I asked, stepping aside to let all of them in.

“Gladly,” Mac said.

Moments later, we were all seated with mugs of our beverages of choice. Aggie was with the kids in the corner of the kitchen, playing little games with them.

The guys regarded one another, not sure where to begin.

“Your jobs,” I said. “Start with that.”

Mac nodded. “Yeah. Well, not sure what else to say on that score, Aubrey. We’re mercs, yeah. And we were telling the truth about the kind of mercenary work we do.”

“Exfils?” I asked. “That was the word?”

“That’s it,” Adam said. “When the four of us finished our last tours with our branches of service, we were all certain of one thing—we didn’t want to use our skills to hurt people any longer.”

“Unless they deserved it,” Marcus interjected. “Unlesstheywere going to hurt innocent people.”

Mac went on. “We figured the best way to do that would be to stick to rescue missions. If there’s a war going on, we offer our services to get any innocent people out of harm’s way. We charge for our skills, but nothing exorbitant.”

“And we offer exceptions for anyone who needs our services but can’t afford it,” Tyler said. “There’s no shortage of people in the world to help.”

Their words were putting me at ease. I’d never gotten an evil vibe from any of them; just the opposite, in fact.

“Trust me,” Adam said. “If we wanted to make a living as hired guns, the type of lowlife mercs who will turn their weapons on anyone for the right stack of cash, , we could do it. Lots of greedy men and women out there who are looking for exactly that.”

“By the way we’re constantly turning down those kinds of offers,” Tyler said. “We always tell them the same thing; we don’t do that kind of work. We’re not in the business of hurting people.”

Each word they spoke calmed me a bit more. All the same, I could sense there was something they weren’t telling me.

“I believe you,” I said. “Thank you for explaining it to me. Now, why are all of you here with the trucks and trailer?”
